That distinction matters for Windows gamers weighing image quality, GPU requirements, desktop usability and competitive response. It also frames the wider four-monitor 2027 Odyssey family announced on August 27 at Gamescom: Samsung is offering very high refresh rates at native resolutions on some models, while using alternate lower-resolution modes to reach still more dramatic numbers on others.
The four monitors Samsung announced
Samsung named four products in the new Odyssey range: the 49-inch OLED G9 G95SJ, 32-inch OLED G8 G80SJ, 42-inch OLED G7 G75SJ and 27-inch G6 G60H. Their form factors are markedly different, so this is not a lineup where a single specification tells buyers much.
The OLED G9 G95SJ is an ultrawide 49-inch model with a native 5,120 × 1,440 resolution and a quoted 360Hz refresh rate. Samsung also specifies a Dual HD mode that runs at 2,560 × 720 and reaches up to 720Hz. In other words, buyers get the full-width desktop and game image at the monitor’s native resolution, but must trade away substantial vertical resolution to pursue the highest refresh setting.
Samsung says this G9 uses a fifth-generation Penta Tandem QD-OLED panel with RGB Stripe subpixels. It also quotes a 0.03ms gray-to-gray response time and peak brightness of up to 1,300 nits on a 3% screen window. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements of a retail display. They nevertheless point to Samsung’s intended positioning: a large, immersive OLED that emphasizes both HDR highlights and very fast motion.
The OLED G8 G80SJ takes a more flexible approach. This 32-inch model has three stated operating points: UHD at 360Hz, QHD at 520Hz and Full HD at 680Hz. The appeal is obvious for a Windows PC used for more than one genre. A player could favor UHD for visually detailed single-player games, then select QHD or Full HD where the priority is frame rate and latency. The trade-off is that lower-resolution modes make less use of the panel’s native pixel grid, and image sharpness should be assessed in eventual hands-on testing rather than assumed from a mode list.
For connectivity, Samsung lists DisplayPort 2.1 UHBR20, two HDMI ports, USB-C with 98W Power Delivery, a two-port downstream USB hub and KVM functionality on the G80SJ. On paper, that makes it the most workstation-friendly of the four. A KVM can be valuable to a user who alternates between a gaming desktop and a work laptop while retaining one keyboard and mouse. USB-C power delivery may also reduce cable clutter for compatible notebooks.
However, the G80SJ’s claimed VESA DisplayHDR TrueBlack 600, AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and NVIDIA G-SYNC Compatible credentials should not be treated as completed certifications yet. Samsung’s own announcement says the relevant certifications are due to be completed at launch. That is an important caveat for buyers who specifically depend on a particular variable-refresh-rate validation or HDR badge.
The OLED G7 G75SJ is a different proposition again: a 42-inch, 16:9, 1000R curved 4K OLED display rated at 165Hz. Samsung also lists a 0.03ms response time and a Glare Free surface treatment. This looks aimed more at players seeking a TV-sized desktop gaming screen than at esports players chasing the largest possible refresh-rate figure. A 42-inch 4K monitor demands considerable desk space, and its 165Hz specification is comparatively restrained beside the G6 and G8. But it retains a conventional 16:9 shape and full 4K resolution, which may be the more practical balance for a broad mix of Windows games and media.
What the G6’s 1,100Hz mode does—and does not—mean
The Fast IPS Odyssey G6 G60H is the product most likely to generate misunderstandings. Samsung specifies it as a 27-inch monitor with a 1ms response time, up to 600Hz in QHD, and up to 1,100Hz in HD through Dual Mode. HD here is 1,280 × 720, not the monitor’s native QHD setting.
That means the buying decision is not simply between a 600Hz screen and a 1,100Hz screen. It is a choice between two operating modes with fundamentally different image-detail targets. QHD provides far more pixels than 720p, while 720p enables Samsung’s advertised maximum refresh rate. The appropriate mode will depend on the game, the user’s tolerance for reduced clarity, and whether the PC can deliver frames at an exceptionally high and stable rate.
The practical implication for Windows users is that a monitor setting alone cannot create a 1,100-frames-per-second experience. A game and the PC must produce frames at that rate or close enough to take meaningful advantage of the panel’s refresh ceiling. At 1,100Hz, each refresh interval is less than one millisecond. That is technically remarkable, but the perceptible benefit will be highly dependent on the game engine, graphics settings, CPU and GPU performance, input setup, and the player’s sensitivity to motion and input response.
There is also a history to the number. Samsung’s earlier CES 2026 announcement listed the G60H at 1,040Hz in HD Dual Mode while retaining its 600Hz QHD rating. The Gamescom announcement raises the HD figure to 1,100Hz. Until final retail documentation is available, shoppers should use Samsung’s current official 1,100Hz figure, not treat earlier material as the final configuration.
One independent Gamescom report put the HD-mode number at 1,110Hz rather than 1,100Hz. Because that conflicts with Samsung’s official announcement, 1,100Hz is the more defensible figure for now. The ten-hertz difference is unlikely to alter a purchase decision, but it illustrates why early event reporting should not substitute for a final manual or retail specification sheet.
The “world’s first” claim needs qualification
Samsung markets the G60H as the world’s first 1,100Hz gaming monitor. That claim should be handled cautiously rather than repeated as settled fact.
LG documentation published before Samsung’s Gamescom announcement lists its UltraGear 25G590B at up to 1,100Hz through an overclocking mode, with 1,000Hz listed separately. The two products may differ in their default and overclocked configurations, but that is precisely why an unqualified world-first claim is not supportable from the available information.
Samsung can accurately be credited with announcing a G60H specified for up to 1,100Hz in its published Dual Mode configuration. Whether it is first depends on a definition that distinguishes that configuration from LG’s overclock-enabled mode. Until Samsung supplies a clear, relevant qualification, prospective buyers should focus on the measurable details that matter more: the resolution at which the speed is available, whether it is stable in final retail firmware, and the visual and input performance verified by testing.
OLED speed, IPS flexibility, and the real comparison
The G6’s Fast IPS panel differentiates it from Samsung’s three OLED entries. Samsung’s OLED models carry the quoted 0.03ms gray-to-gray figure, while the IPS G6 is specified at 1ms. Those numbers describe a vendor-stated response-time metric, not a complete prediction of real-world motion clarity or input lag. Backlight behavior, overdrive tuning, frame pacing, variable refresh operation and any artifacts at alternate modes all affect the experience.
The OLED G8 could be the most intriguing performance compromise if its final behavior matches the specification. Its 360Hz UHD mode is already an unusually demanding combination of resolution and refresh rate; the 520Hz QHD and 680Hz Full HD alternatives give users options without requiring a second display. Yet those modes should not be viewed as equally suitable for every activity. Windows desktop text, productivity work and slower games generally benefit from higher pixel density, while competitive games may favor the lower-resolution modes if the hardware can sustain them.
The G9 makes a similar compromise in ultrawide form. Native 5,120 × 1,440 at 360Hz is its primary high-resolution identity, while the 720Hz Dual HD option targets a specialized use case. For many owners, the native ultrawide format may be the more consequential feature for everyday Windows multitasking and cinematic games. The lower-resolution high-speed mode is an additional capability, not necessarily the reason to buy a 49-inch OLED.
HDR10+ GAMING and 3D content are still ecosystem questions
Alongside the monitors, Samsung and Activision announced that HDR10+ GAMING will be integrated into Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. Samsung says it plans to extend HDR10+ GAMING to more than 20 AAA titles by the first half of 2027.
That is a forward-looking target, not confirmation that more than 20 titles are already supported. For Windows players, display HDR features only become meaningful when game support, implementation quality and the rest of the display chain align. A promising title partnership does not by itself resolve the wider question of how broadly the format will be available across a player’s library.
Samsung also said Cyberpunk 2077 and Cronos: The New Dawn would appear as newly Odyssey 3D-supported titles at its Gamescom presentation. This signals continued software support ambitions for the company’s 3D display platform, but it should not be conflated with compatibility across the conventional G9, G8, G7 and G6 monitors announced here.
Availability is clearer for only one model
The G60H has the firmest availability statement: Samsung says it will launch globally in the second half of 2026. It has not announced a price in the supplied materials.
For the OLED G9 G95SJ, OLED G8 G80SJ and OLED G7 G75SJ, Samsung says availability will vary by market and launch timing, with pricing to be announced later. Their “2027” designation should therefore not be read as a universal release date. There is no basis yet for Windows buyers to assume a particular country will receive every model at the same time—or at all.
A measured way to read Samsung’s announcement
Samsung’s Gamescom lineup shows a clear direction: monitors that can alter their resolution and refresh-rate balance according to the game, plus OLED options stretching from 32-inch 4K to a 49-inch ultrawide. The G60H’s 1,100Hz capability is a notable engineering headline, but it belongs in its proper context: it is an HD Dual Mode specification, whereas QHD tops out at 600Hz.
For buyers, that is not a dismissal of the monitor. It is the essential purchasing information. The most useful next evidence will be final retail specifications, confirmed certification status for the G80SJ, regional prices and availability, and independent tests of brightness, motion behavior, response times and alternate-resolution modes. Until then, the announcement is best viewed as a strong statement of Samsung’s ambitions—not a complete answer to which Odyssey model will be the right Windows gaming monitor for a particular desk, PC and game library.
