Valve’s beta Steam Frame compatibility badges have disappeared from Steam’s game pages, but the evidence does not support treating that change as a release delay. The more consequential finding is that the removal appears to be part of a broader compatibility-UI change affecting Steam Deck labels as well, while Valve’s official Steam Frame developer documentation and its “Great on Frame” storefront remain in place. The Shortcut first reported the vanished Steam Frame verification icon on July 31, citing Steam Hardware Updates on X. Public Steam community reports independently show users losing the ability to view Frame status for VR and standalone titles around July 30—and several reported the same disappearance for Steam Deck compatibility information. Valve has not explained the change publicly.
That makes “Steam Frame badge vanishes” a real observation but a poor proxy for a delayed headset. A per-title badge in a beta interface is temporary storefront plumbing; it is not a reservation page, a price announcement, or a shipping commitment. Valve still has not published any of those three things for Steam Frame.

Reporting around Steam Frame has blurred together three separate systems: a game’s individual compatibility rating, Valve’s “Great on Frame” storefront collection, and the headset’s primary use as a wireless PC-streaming device. They overlap, but they are not interchangeable.
Valve’s GDC 2026 developer presentation states explicitly that Steam Frame has no Verified program for streaming. The reasoning is straightforward: when a game runs on a Windows or Linux gaming PC and is sent wirelessly to the headset, performance depends on the host PC and local network, not on Frame’s onboard silicon. A game that is demanding for standalone hardware can still be perfectly usable when streamed from a capable desktop.
The official Steamworks documentation instead positions “Steam Frame Standalone Verified” around games that run locally on the headset’s Arm-based SteamOS hardware. For locally executed VR titles, Valve’s stated target is 90 frames per second; for standalone non-VR titles, it is 30 fps at 1280×720, along with working controls and legible UI.
That distinction is why a simple “Unsupported” label could be misleading on Steam Frame. A title may be unsupported for standalone operation but remain viable—or excellent—when streamed from a PC. The current beta UI appears to have struggled to communicate this without turning a product-page badge into a technical footnote.
Steam community discussion has converged on that same problem, with users noting that the old presentation made it hard to tell whether a VR title failed entirely, ran only through PC streaming, or worked locally with limitations. That is user speculation, not a Valve statement, but it matches the verification boundaries Valve has already documented.

Valve had already been revising the rules​

The disappearance arrives after Valve changed the way Steam Frame verification treats flatscreen games. Steam Deck HQ reported on July 9 that Valve stopped requiring 2D games to meet the headset’s native display-resolution expectation to receive a Verified result. That revision allowed Portal 2 to move from Playable to Verified for Steam Frame.
The practical issue was obvious. A flatscreen title is displayed in a virtual screen environment, rather than occupying the whole headset view in the manner of a native VR game. Treating it as if it had to render for a full immersive display would reject many otherwise usable games.
Valve’s own GDC slides support the larger point: native VR and native 2D software are assessed against different performance targets. The company is also using technologies including Proton, FEX, and Arm64 support to make x86 Steam software more practical on the headset’s local hardware. That is an ambitious compatibility project, and the criteria are still being adjusted in public.
A temporary removal of user-facing labels while Valve changes the rules is therefore unsurprising. It may be inconvenient for enthusiasts tracking each status change, but it is less alarming than the alternative interpretation that Valve has abandoned verification just as it prepares to sell a device whose standalone capabilities depend on clear expectations.

The numbers in the launch-watch reporting do not line up​

The Shortcut article says Valve had around 25 games in “Great on Frame” and that only 40 to 50 games had received a label of any sort, including titles marked unsupported. Those counts should be treated cautiously.
UploadVR’s July 27 update identified 31 titles in the “Great on Frame” collection, including Ancient Dungeon, Cubism, Into Black, Pistol Whip, Red Matter 2, Titan Isles, Underdogs, and Walkabout Mini Golf. It separately reported on July 29 that three more VR games had gained the “Great on Frame” designation. Earlier coverage from Road to VR and Steam Deck HQ showed that the storefront launched on July 10 with only four or five entries, depending on what a given Steam client surfaced.
The discrepancy is explainable only in part by timing. “Great on Frame” is a curated storefront selection, while the beta page-level indicators reportedly covered Verified, Playable, and Unsupported outcomes. Counting one system as though it were the other produces inflated or conflicting totals.
For potential buyers, the important number is not the total count of badges discovered in Steam’s back end. It is how many familiar games Valve is willing to present to ordinary customers as a clean, recommended starting library when reservations open. The current “Great on Frame” set is much more useful evidence for that question—and it has been growing, not shrinking.

The launch signals are still incomplete​

Valve has officially said Steam Frame is shipping “this summer,” a window it reiterated in June alongside broader Steam Machine and Steam Frame verification changes. Its Steamworks documentation remains publicly available, describes the headset as a standalone SteamOS VR device with PC streaming support, and directs developers to setup, controller, debugging, and standalone-verification material.
Independent VR outlets have also reported that Valve’s “Great on Frame” store page went live in July. Road to VR described the early collection as a storefront page for software certified to work with the forthcoming headset; UploadVR’s later reporting shows the list expanded rapidly through the end of July.
Still missing are the details that determine whether this is a near-term purchase or merely a prepared launch pipeline:
  • Valve has not announced Steam Frame’s retail price.
  • Valve has not set a specific sale date or opened reservations.
  • Valve has not published a final consumer-facing explanation of the difference between standalone verification and PC streaming.
  • Valve has not said whether the missing compatibility controls are being redesigned, relocated, or restored unchanged.
Those omissions matter more than a vanished beta icon. Regulatory approval and warehouse shipments can indicate that hardware is moving through the final stages of a launch, but they cannot establish when customers will be able to order it, how much it will cost, or which configurations will ship first.

What Windows PC gamers should take from this​

Steam Frame’s pitch to Windows users is not that every Steam game will run locally on the headset. Valve’s documentation says the product supports Windows and Linux PC titles through streaming, while standalone software can include native Arm64 and Android-based applications. For a gaming PC owner, the headset’s Windows connection is likely to be its broadest compatibility path from day one.
That makes the missing badge especially important to present correctly. If a Steam listing no longer displays a green Steam Frame checkmark, that does not mean the game will not work when streamed from a Windows PC. It means Steam is currently not exposing the beta status in the same way it did days ago. Those are very different claims.
The strongest conclusion is modest but clear: Valve is still building the Steam Frame compatibility system, and the badge removal shows the consumer UI is not settled. It does not, on its own, show that Steam Frame has slipped beyond Valve’s summer 2026 target.
Until Valve publishes a price, order date, and final compatibility explanation, the “Great on Frame” storefront—and not a temporary per-game beta badge—is the more meaningful launch tracker.
