That distinction matters more after Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft is no longer issuing ordinary security updates for the operating system, leaving organizations and home users with a choice among Windows 11-compatible hardware, Extended Security Updates where eligible, or a move to another platform. A Windows-like Linux desktop can make that last option less intimidating, but it does not make Linux a drop-in replacement for Windows applications, Active Directory policies, driver stacks, or line-of-business software.
The useful conclusion from the six examples is narrower: familiar desktop conventions can shorten the human part of a migration. They do not eliminate the technical work.
Linux Mint and Kubuntu preserve the conventional desktop
Linux Mint’s Cinnamon edition is probably the least controversial entry in the list. Cinnamon was created after GNOME’s interface shifted away from the classic desktop model, restoring the panel, application menu, system tray, task list, and window-focused Alt+Tab behavior that users of Windows 7-era PCs and older Linux desktops already understood. Its bottom panel and left-side Menu button resemble Windows because both follow a long-running desktop convention, rather than because Mint is attempting to duplicate Microsoft’s product.
For a home PC or an uncomplicated office workstation, that familiarity has value. A user can locate installed applications, pin frequently used tools, switch among open windows, and reach basic settings without learning GNOME Shell’s overview-first workflow. But administrators should treat Cinnamon as a desktop environment choice, not evidence of application compatibility. A familiar menu does nothing to make legacy Windows drivers, Outlook add-ins, Access databases, browser plugins, or endpoint-management agents work on Linux.
Kubuntu lands in the same category. It combines Ubuntu’s package base with KDE Plasma, a highly configurable desktop that has long offered a bottom panel, launcher, task manager, system tray, and a Windows-style file-management model by default. Plasma can be made to resemble Windows 11, Windows 7, or something entirely different, but Kubuntu’s identity is KDE’s flexibility rather than imitation.
That makes Kubuntu a stronger candidate than a themed Windows lookalike for users who want control over the interface. It also gives IT staff a clearer maintenance story: Kubuntu 26.04 LTS is supported through April 2029, while its current desktop stack is a recognizable upstream KDE Plasma deployment. The trade-off is that customization itself can become a support burden when every user changes panels, shortcuts, and app launchers independently.
AnduinOS and Zorin OS build migration features around the look
AnduinOS takes a more deliberate Windows 11-inspired route. The project uses GNOME but ships a themed and extended interface that can place taskbar icons in a Windows 11-style centered arrangement or use a more traditional left-aligned layout. Its current 2.0 LTS release is based on Ubuntu 26.04 packages and GNOME 50, with support listed through April 2031.
The source article notes that AnduinOS was created by Anduin Xue, who previously worked at Microsoft. That biographical detail helps explain the project’s design instincts, but it should not be mistaken for a Microsoft connection, endorsement, or support commitment. AnduinOS is an independent, GPL-licensed project. Its approach is sensible for an individual who wants GNOME’s underlying technology without GNOME’s default interface conventions; it is less compelling as an enterprise standard unless an organization is prepared to assess its release process, support model, security response, and long-term maintainer capacity.
Zorin OS is the most substantial migration-oriented entry in the group because it pairs familiar layouts with actual transition tooling. Zorin OS 18 launched on October 14, 2025, the day Windows 10 support ended, and the Zorin team later reported more than one million downloads in five weeks. Tom’s Hardware and Windows Central separately reported the vendor’s telemetry claim that roughly 780,000 of those downloads originated from Windows systems.
The number needs careful handling. Downloads are not users, and Windows-origin download telemetry does not prove that 780,000 people permanently replaced Windows. People download repeatedly, test an ISO in a virtual machine, reinstall, or use multiple devices. Still, the timing is meaningful: Zorin clearly captured interest from users confronting Windows 10’s retirement and Windows 11 hardware requirements.
Its more important feature is not its Windows-like panel. Zorin OS 18 introduced a database that recognizes installers for many common Windows applications and can point users toward a web version, a native Linux build, or an alternative application. That is useful guidance, especially when a user double-clicks a Microsoft Office installer and discovers that their best supported option may be Microsoft 365 in a browser rather than attempting an unsupported Wine installation.
Zorin’s Windows App Support also exposes the limit of visual familiarity. It uses Wine compatibility technology for selected .exe and .msi installers, and Zorin explicitly warns that not every Windows application will work fully. That is the correct expectation to set. Compatibility layers can be effective for particular programs, but they are not a licensing workaround, a substitute for Windows itself, or a dependable answer for every corporate application.
Winux is the outlier, and its branding deserves scrutiny
Winux—previously marketed under Linuxfx and Wubuntu names—is the closest match for the word clone. It uses an Ubuntu base and KDE Plasma but applies a Windows 11-like theme, wallpaper, icons, and layout aggressively enough that an untrained user could mistake a screenshot for Windows. Independent reviews have also documented the project’s recurring identity changes, from Linuxfx and Wubuntu to Winux.
That history does not automatically prove wrongdoing, but it is a practical reason to be cautious. Operating systems occupy an unusually trusted position: they handle credentials, software installation, updates, disk access, and security configuration. A distribution that uses visual resemblance to a commercial product as its principal appeal has a higher duty to make its ownership, update infrastructure, security practices, and paid components plainly legible.
The source article is right to flag Winux’s paid PowerTools add-on and its branding turbulence, but users should avoid treating the issue as merely aesthetic. KDE Plasma already includes a capable system-settings application, and Ubuntu-based distributions already provide established package-management paths. Before deploying Winux on a personal or business machine, a prospective user should verify where system packages originate, how quickly security updates arrive, who maintains the repositories, and what exactly the paid layer changes.
For most people, the visual payoff is not enough to justify choosing the least transparent option in this list. KDE Plasma on Kubuntu can deliver a conventional Windows-like workflow without tying the experience to another company’s imitation of Windows branding.
Q4OS is a low-spec option, not a Windows XP security fix
Q4OS is included for its retro Windows XP-like presentation, particularly when installed with its Trinity Desktop option and the XPQ4 look-and-feel packages. The underlying engineering case is more interesting than nostalgia. Q4OS lists a Trinity configuration with minimum requirements of a 500MHz processor, 512MB of RAM, and 6GB of disk space, while also offering a 32-bit installer for older i386 hardware.
Those figures make Q4OS relevant to hardware that Windows 11 will never support. A machine that struggles with modern Windows may be perfectly adequate for lightweight browsing, document editing, remote administration, or a single-purpose local application under Linux. But the Windows XP aesthetic must not confuse the security issue: a new Linux install receiving current patches is safer than continuing to run Windows XP, while a browser-supported workload on obsolete hardware still carries limits around modern web performance, Wi-Fi support, encryption, and peripheral drivers.
The XP resemblance is also optional rather than intrinsic. Q4OS is Debian-based and can run Trinity or KDE Plasma; its Windows-like themes are part of the user experience, not a recreation of Windows internals. That makes it an appropriate specialist choice for old hardware, provided users accept that the software environment is Linux and plan around that fact.
The desktop is the easy part of a Windows exit
The six distributions demonstrate three very different ideas that are often muddled together: a conventional desktop layout, a migration-focused Linux experience, and a visual imitation of Windows. Mint and Kubuntu chiefly offer the first. AnduinOS and Zorin OS add varying degrees of Windows 11-inspired design and onboarding. Q4OS specializes in low-resource systems and retro familiarity. Winux pursues the most literal resemblance, along with the greatest need for buyer—or installer—beware.
For a Windows user considering Linux after Windows 10, the selection process should start with applications and hardware rather than screenshots:
- Confirm that essential software has a native Linux version, a reliable web version, or a documented compatibility path before replacing the existing Windows installation.
- Test the distribution from a live USB or a separate drive first, including Wi-Fi, audio, graphics, printers, VPN access, suspend and resume, and any required external devices.
- Keep a supported Windows installation or virtualized Windows environment where proprietary applications, vendor utilities, compliance tools, or specialized peripherals require it.
A Start-menu-shaped launcher can make the first week on Linux easier. It cannot turn Linux into Windows, and the distributions that are most honest about that boundary are the ones most likely to make a migration stick.
