A recent Register Kettle discussion brought those topics together. Its most useful lesson is not that older technology was automatically better. It is that technology choices should be judged against a clear job, a realistic threat model and the evidence behind the claims being made.
Windows XP turns 25—but the date matters
The Windows XP milestone in August 2026 is the 25th anniversary of release to manufacturing, or RTM. Microsoft released XP to PC manufacturers on August 24, 2001, and scheduled broad availability for October 25 that year. Those are distinct events.
That distinction may sound pedantic, but it improves the historical record. RTM is the point at which an operating system build is handed to manufacturers for installation on new machines and preparation of distribution media. It is not the same as the day ordinary buyers could generally purchase it. The public-availability anniversary arrives on October 25, 2026.
XP was significant because it extended the Windows 2000 and Windows NT foundation to home PCs. Microsoft described it as built on a common code base, replacing the old split in which consumer Windows and business-oriented NT systems had substantially different underpinnings. For users, that made XP a major transition rather than merely a new visual theme: consumer Windows was moving to the NT family’s architecture.
That history helps explain XP’s staying power in collective memory. It also explains why it remains tempting to use XP as a blunt comparison point in arguments about the modern Windows experience. But a compelling historical contrast is not a current deployment recommendation.
The minimum-requirement comparison is real, but limited
Microsoft’s formal Windows XP Professional requirement listed 64 MB of RAM as the minimum supported amount, while recommending 128 MB or more. Windows 11’s documented minimum is 4 GB of RAM, along with 64 GB of storage, UEFI firmware capable of Secure Boot, and TPM 2.0.
The arithmetic is striking: 4 GB is 64 times XP’s 64 MB minimum. Yet minimum specifications answer a narrow question—whether the operating system meets its stated baseline—not whether it will deliver a satisfying experience with a modern browser, collaboration software, many browser tabs, endpoint protection and current workloads.
This is why the claim that Windows 11 formally “needs” 8 GB should not be repeated as a specification. Four gigabytes is Microsoft’s documented minimum. Someone may reasonably find 8 GB more practical for their own use, but that is a performance judgement, not the published baseline.
There is still a useful lesson in the comparison. It is reasonable to analyze modern Windows requirements in the context of contemporary security expectations, storage demands and the application workloads people now expect a PC to handle. That analysis does not prove that every individual requirement has one verified cause, nor does it establish that every higher requirement is automatically justified. It does show why users should distinguish a hard compatibility floor from the memory and storage needed for their actual work.
For anyone buying or repurposing a Windows PC, that means asking better questions than “will it install?”: Will its RAM be sufficient when required applications run together? Does it meet the security requirements of the Windows version it will use? How much storage remains after updates, applications and user files? A machine that only clears the published minimum may be technically compatible while still feeling constrained.
XP’s support status is the decisive modern fact
Windows XP and Windows XP Service Pack 3 reached the end of extended support on April 8, 2014. That is the fact that should frame any present-day XP conversation.
Confusion persists because Microsoft’s Download Center lists an XP SP3 package, KB4012598, with a July 15, 2024 publication date. The listing associates the package with the older MS17-010 security bulletin. It supports the narrow observation that a package was published or republished on that date; it does not establish that routine Windows XP security support resumed in 2024.
This is more than a date dispute. A download page for an older update cannot substitute for an active support lifecycle. Users should not interpret it as an assurance that XP is receiving regular fixes or as a reason to treat the operating system as safe for modern online work.
XP may still need to be retained for a narrowly defined legacy dependency, such as access to particular older hardware or software. That should mean an offline system or one that is tightly segmented from other networks and services—not a general-purpose PC. Retained XP machines should not be used for sensitive accounts, personal or workplace services, or ordinary modern internet activity such as routine browsing, email and collaboration work.
The practical takeaway is straightforward: preserve XP only when a specific legacy dependency demands it, and isolate it accordingly. Preservation is not a supported computing strategy. The distinction is especially important where sensitive accounts, personal files or workplace systems are involved.
Casio’s retro watch is not literally an upgraded F-91W
The connected Casio product at the center of the discussion is the F-B100W, not an F-91W revision. Casio positions its band design as sharing the F-91W’s outer-side look, which makes the lineage clear, but the product identity matters when assessing what it can actually do.
The stated F-B100W feature set includes Bluetooth smartphone connectivity, automatic time correction, step counting and app-based life-log data. Casio also claims roughly two years of battery life from a CR2016 cell. That combination is notable because it adds a limited set of connected functions without abandoning the recognizably modest digital-watch form.
It would be easy to overstate what follows. The available information does not establish that the watch communicates only once daily, identifies a particular Bluetooth Low Energy version, or confines data transfer to one direction. Nor is there evidence that it will reshape the smartwatch market, regardless of how appealing its simpler approach may be.
Still, the F-B100W illustrates an important product-design argument. Some users may prefer a watch that prioritizes legibility, a familiar interface and infrequent battery changes, while accepting a smaller feature set than a full smartwatch. Others will value richer notifications, broader health features and app ecosystems enough to accept more charging and more complexity. Neither preference is irrational; they describe different priorities.
The connected features also mean this is not simply a standalone old-school watch. Step counting and app-based records introduce a phone and data-management component. Buyers should assess the actual capabilities of the associated app rather than assume that a retro exterior settles privacy or connectivity questions.
Paper password books are a conditional tool, not a security cure
The report that Australia Post branches were selling small password books for AU$4.90, with larger versions for AU$5.90, has prompted a familiar argument: is writing passwords down safer than keeping them digitally? The reported branch pricing was based on social-media evidence and was not independently confirmed from an Australia Post retail listing, so the product availability should be treated with that caveat.
The broader security question deserves more care than a slogan such as “paper is more secure.” A paper record has one obvious advantage: an attacker generally needs physical access to obtain it. For a person who struggles with digital tools, a dedicated book kept in a physically secure place can be a workable conditional option.
But a book is also a single physical point of failure. It can be lost, stolen, copied or seen by someone who should not have access. It cannot create strong unique credentials, warn about reuse, autofill a legitimate site or help a user recognize a fraudulent one. The manual process can also make phishing harder to avoid: a carefully written password still does harm if typed into an imitation login page.
That does not make password managers risk-free. Their security and convenience stem from generating and storing long, unique credentials in encrypted vaults, but the master secret becomes extremely valuable. If it is compromised, the owner may need to change every stored password. A strong, memorable master passphrase and multi-factor authentication where available are therefore central to using a manager responsibly.
Passkeys can reduce phishing exposure on services that support them, because they avoid the familiar process of entering a reusable password into a site. They are not, however, a complete account-security plan. Users need to understand their recovery options and make arrangements for a lost, replaced or inaccessible device.
Password managers remain a strong option for creating and storing unique passwords, especially for accounts and services that do not support passkeys. Where passwords are used, two-step verification can add another safeguard when it is available. The most suitable arrangement is context-dependent: it should account for a person’s devices, ability to manage recovery, the importance of the account and the likely risks they face.
A secured paper record can be an accommodation for a particular person or circumstance, but it is not a universal substitute for a password manager and cannot hold usable passkeys in the same way. People who choose paper should avoid predictable passwords and protect the book as they would other sensitive documents. Organizations should be especially cautious about normalizing written password lists. A personal contingency measure is not the same thing as an appropriate workplace credential-management policy.
The durable value is disciplined simplicity
There is a reason old technology keeps returning to the conversation. Windows XP recalls an era when modest hardware could run a mainstream desktop operating system. Casio’s F-B100W suggests that connected features need not always arrive in a screen-heavy, frequently charged device. A password book highlights the fact that security measures must be usable by real people, not merely technically elegant.
But each example also demonstrates the boundary of nostalgia. XP’s historical efficiency does not erase its ended support lifecycle or make it suitable for everyday online work. A retro-looking Bluetooth watch is still a connected device whose details deserve scrutiny. Paper can reduce certain remote-attack concerns while creating physical-security and phishing risks.
The constructive response is not to reject modern technology or return wholesale to old practices. It is to demand precise claims, choose features that solve a real problem, and refuse false absolutes. For Windows users, that means keeping the distinction between a supported platform and an isolated legacy system clear. For buyers of connected devices, it means judging the actual specifications rather than the aesthetic. And for account security, it means combining passkeys or unique managed passwords with practical recovery and device-loss planning.
Old ideas can remain useful. They become genuinely valuable only when paired with modern clarity about their trade-offs.
