To make a Windows PC prefer faster Wi‑Fi, connect it to a separate 5 GHz or 6 GHz network name (SSID) rather than a combined 2.4/5/6 GHz SSID. If your Wi‑Fi adapter driver offers a Preferred Band setting, set it to prefer 6 GHz or 5 GHz as a secondary measure. This guide applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11. 5 GHz usually provides higher throughput than 2.4 GHz at short-to-medium range. 6 GHz can provide the best performance and lowest congestion near the router, but it has the shortest useful range and is more affected by walls.

Prerequisites and compatibility​

Before changing anything, confirm that all three components support the band you want to use:
  • A router or access point broadcasting a 5 GHz network, or a 6 GHz network for Wi‑Fi 6E/Wi‑Fi 7.
  • A Windows PC with a Wi‑Fi adapter that supports the desired band.
  • The current Wi‑Fi driver from the PC or adapter manufacturer.
  • The Wi‑Fi password and access to the router’s administration interface.
  • For 6 GHz, router security and adapter support for WPA3 are normally required. Do not weaken router security to make an older device connect.
Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt, then run:

Look for Radio types supported:
  • 802.11a, 802.11ac, 802.11ax, or 802.11be normally indicates that the adapter can use 5 GHz, subject to the adapter model and driver.

2. Create separate 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz network names on the router​

Most routers combine their bands under one name by using a feature called Smart Connect, Band Steering, One Wi‑Fi Name, or similar. To choose a band deliberately, separate the names.
Warning: Saving wireless changes can disconnect every device from the router, including the PC you are using to configure it. Before proceeding, record the existing Wi‑Fi name, password, and security setting. If possible, configure the router from a PC connected by Ethernet. Do not factory-reset the router merely to change Wi‑Fi bands.
  1. Sign in to your router or mesh system’s administration interface.
  2. Find the wireless configuration section. It may be named Wi‑Fi, Wireless, Wireless Settings, or Network.
  3. If enabled, turn off the router feature that combines bands, such as Smart Connect or Band Steering.
  4. Give each enabled band a distinct name. For example:

  3. Review the Wi‑Fi connection details.
If the displayed properties do not identify the band, verify using the distinct SSID you created and the router’s connected-client page.

Check from Command Prompt​

Run:

Confirm that:
  • SSID is your -5G or -6G name.
  • Radio type is appropriate for the adapter and router, such as 802.11ac, 802.11ax, or 802.11be.
  • Signal quality and receive/transmit rates are reasonable for the PC’s distance from the router.
Repeat your earlier speed tests from the same location. A higher Wi‑Fi link rate does not guarantee a faster internet-speed result if the internet plan, router, VPN, server, or another device is the bottleneck.

Alternate method: set the adapter’s preferred band​

Use this method when the router must keep one shared SSID, or when you want to supplement separate SSIDs. This setting is provided by the Wi‑Fi adapter driver, not by Windows itself, so names and choices vary.
Warning: Changing an adapter’s advanced property can immediately disconnect Wi‑Fi. If you are remotely connected to the PC through that Wi‑Fi connection, do not make this change without another way to regain access.
  1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Network adapters.
  3. Right-click the wireless adapter. Avoid selecting Ethernet, Bluetooth, WAN Miniport, or a virtual adapter.
  4. Select Properties.
  5. Select the Advanced tab.

For 6 GHz, confirm all of the following:
  • The router supports Wi‑Fi 6E or Wi‑Fi 7 and has 6 GHz enabled.
  • The PC has a Wi‑Fi 6E or Wi‑Fi 7 adapter, not merely Wi‑Fi 6.
  • The latest OEM Wi‑Fi driver is installed.
  • The router security is configured for supported WPA3 use.
  • You are close enough to the router for a reliable 6 GHz signal.
Install Wi‑Fi drivers from the PC manufacturer or adapter manufacturer rather than relying only on a generic driver. Restart after updating a driver.

The PC connects to 5 GHz or 6 GHz, but the connection is worse​

This usually indicates a signal problem rather than a Windows configuration problem. Higher-frequency Wi‑Fi travels less effectively through walls, floors, furniture, and appliances.
Test in this order:
  1. Move closer to the router.
  2. Test 6 GHz and 5 GHz from the same location.
  3. Use 5 GHz if 6 GHz has low signal or frequent drops.
  4. Use 2.4 GHz only in distant rooms where range is more important than speed.
  5. Check that the router is not placed inside a cabinet, behind a television, or near metal objects and interference sources.

Windows keeps returning to 2.4 GHz​

Also check:
  • The 2.4 GHz SSID does not have Connect automatically enabled.
  • The old combined SSID was forgotten after you split the router names.

  • The router’s Smart Connect or Band Steering feature is disabled when using separate SSIDs.

The 6 GHz SSID appears but will not connect​

Do not reduce security to WEP, WPA, or TKIP. Instead:

  2. Check that the adapter documentation specifically lists Wi‑Fi 6E or Wi‑Fi 7.
  3. Confirm the router’s 6 GHz radio and WPA3 configuration.

Wi‑Fi stopped working after changing the driver or adapter settings​
