Hi all. I was wondering can I upgrade from windows 7 32bit to windows 7 64bit using a 64bit upgrade edition? I got told on another forum it works aslong as you input the product key AFTER the installation not during?

No that can't be done at all. They have different architecture. If you switch from 32 to 64 bit you have to do a clean installation.

Was your 32 bit version activated? There are many unanswered questions about the activation process and what you can or cannot do. I would suggest you call Microsoft and explain to them.
