Ars Technica’s review of Golden Gate finds an unusually divided release. Beneath the AI push are practical refinements to the controversial Liquid Glass design, external-display support, Spotlight, file browsing, and day-to-day responsiveness. But the review also documents a shift Apple’s own support language can obscure: users can decline the new Siri AI beta, yet they cannot fully remove the underlying Apple Intelligence layer or reclaim its model storage as they could in macOS 26 Tahoe.
Apple released macOS 27 on September 14, 2026. Its documentation says the OS supports any Mac with Apple Silicon, beginning with the original M1 generation from late 2020, and says Apple Intelligence becomes automatically available on eligible Macs in supported languages and regions. Apple also sets a storage reservation of up to 8GB for many compatible Macs and up to 14GB for M3-or-newer Macs with at least 12GB of unified memory.
For WindowsForum readers who also manage Macs, Golden Gate is therefore less a routine annual upgrade than a clear inventory deadline: identify Intel hardware, locate remaining Intel-only applications, and decide whether the organization will keep those Macs on their existing supported OS or replace them before the support runway narrows.
Apple Silicon Is Now the macOS Baseline
Golden Gate is the first macOS release since Apple’s mid-2000s PowerPC-to-Intel transition that excludes an entire processor family. The late Intel holdouts—including Macs sold in 2019 and 2020—could run macOS 26 Tahoe, but no Intel model can install macOS 27 through Apple’s supported path.
Apple’s compatibility list is simple compared with past releases: if the Mac has an M-series chip, or the A18 Pro-equipped MacBook Neo, it qualifies. The cutoff includes M1 MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and iMac systems, along with every Mac Studio and the 2023 Mac Pro. The 2019 Intel Mac Pro, a machine that remained relevant in some video, audio, development, and specialized PCIe workflows, is left behind.
That does not mean Intel Macs become unusable on September 14. Ars Technica reports that Apple intends to continue delivering security and Safari updates for macOS 26 Tahoe through roughly fall 2028 and for macOS 15 Sequoia through roughly fall 2027, following Apple’s normal support pattern. Apple has not published a firm end-of-support commitment for either release, so administrators should treat those dates as planning assumptions rather than contractual deadlines.
The distinction is familiar to Windows administrators: feature support and security support have separated. An Intel Mac still running Tahoe can remain a controlled, patched endpoint for a time. It cannot receive Golden Gate’s new platform changes, current development APIs, or the next major round of Apple Intelligence features. Organizations with long hardware depreciation cycles should not mistake continued patching for a viable feature roadmap.
The Bigger Application Deadline Is macOS 28
The more immediate operational issue is not merely the retirement of Intel Macs. It is the approaching retirement of Intel Mac applications on Apple Silicon Macs.
Golden Gate still includes Rosetta 2, Apple’s translation environment for running x86_64 Mac software on Arm-based hardware. In macOS 27, existing Intel-only applications continue to work under Rosetta without the restrictions Apple plans for the next release. But Apple has confirmed that macOS 27 is the final version to provide Rosetta 2 for general-purpose applications; macOS 28 will retain only a narrower compatibility path for some older games with Intel dependencies.
Ars Technica reports that Golden Gate begins surfacing warnings for Intel-only apps and adds an Intel-based Apps view under System Settings > General > About. The list shows recently launched Intel-only applications, while universal binaries do not appear. That is a better discovery mechanism than waiting for a future macOS upgrade to break an obscure utility, plug-in host, driver helper, or line-of-business tool.
For a Mac fleet, the sensible move is to export or document that list now and match each entry to an owner and remediation plan. Developers should confirm that internal apps ship universal binaries. IT teams should pay special attention to signed-but-abandoned utilities, audio and video plug-ins, hardware-management software, legacy VPN components, printer support packages, and anything distributed outside the Mac App Store.
This is where Golden Gate has a useful administrative lesson for Windows environments, too. Platform migrations are rarely blocked by the operating system’s headline features. They are blocked by a small number of neglected binaries that nobody realizes remain in daily use until compatibility disappears. Apple is providing a warning year; it would be wasteful to spend it discovering dependencies after macOS 28 ships.
Apple Intelligence Is Built In; Siri AI Remains Optional
Apple’s language around its AI rollout requires careful reading. Its macOS 27 release notes say Siri AI is “rolling out” and can be turned on in Settings. Ars Technica’s testing agrees that users can opt out of Siri AI beta and either disable Siri or return to “Siri Classic.” In that state, Spotlight returns to its prior visual design and behavior.
But that is not the same as disabling Apple Intelligence. Apple’s support document says the next generation of Apple Intelligence is automatically available on eligible devices after updating to the 27.0 releases. Ars Technica reports that the system-wide Apple Intelligence toggle and the option to delete downloaded models, both present in Tahoe, are gone in Golden Gate.
The practical difference is significant. An administrator or individual user can limit exposure to the conversational assistant and keep traditional Spotlight behavior, but cannot restore the old model in which the AI platform itself was a removable optional feature. Apple Intelligence services remain integrated into features such as photo editing, Finder naming suggestions, Mail and Messages replies, Safari tools, accessibility descriptions, and Shortcuts.
Apple also says some cloud-backed features will eventually face daily usage limits. These can affect Siri AI, image-generation and intelligent photo-editing features, and AFM 3 Cloud models available through Shortcuts and third-party applications. Apple says expanded access will be available for a fee in the future, but has not disclosed pricing, quotas, enforcement dates, or whether a future subscription will be sold to consumers, businesses, or both.
That omission matters for anyone considering Golden Gate’s Shortcuts integrations as a workflow dependency. A feature that works freely at launch may later be capped according to request complexity, demand, or Apple’s policies. Until Apple publishes actual limits and commercial terms, organizations should avoid designing business-critical automation around cloud-model calls without a fallback path.
Hardware Eligibility Does Not Mean Feature Parity
Every supported Mac can run macOS 27 and access baseline Apple Intelligence, but Golden Gate creates a second threshold within the Apple Silicon lineup. Ars Technica reports that Apple’s more capable on-device AFM 3 Core Advanced model requires an M3-family chip or newer and at least 12GB of unified memory.
That leaves a real gap. An M1 or M2 Mac with 16GB of memory qualifies for Golden Gate and the standard Apple Intelligence experience, but not the Advanced model. An M3 Mac with 8GB also falls short. According to Ars Technica, the immediately visible Advanced-only benefits are more expressive Siri voices and improved dictation, though Apple’s architecture leaves room for that gap to expand over the lifetime of macOS 27.
For procurement, this is a warning against treating an M-series label as a complete specification. The original M1 hardware still has a supported OS path, and Apple’s broad compatibility is better than a hard cutoff after only a few years. But feature planning should distinguish “runs macOS 27” from “receives the higher-capability local AI model.”
The storage requirement deserves similar attention. Apple specifies up to 8GB for Apple Intelligence on many compatible Macs and up to 14GB on M3-and-later Macs with 12GB or more memory. On a 256GB MacBook configured with encrypted local profiles, large cloud-sync caches, developer tools, or media libraries, that is not trivial overhead. Golden Gate’s AI footprint may be tolerable on a spacious desktop SSD; on entry-level portable hardware, it compounds the storage pressure created by the OS upgrade itself.
The Quiet Improvements Are the Safer Upgrade Case
If the AI changes are not a selling point, Golden Gate still includes upgrades that are easier to evaluate on their own merits. Apple says it has improved Spotlight and Mail search, AirDrop transfers, network file browsing, and general responsiveness. It has also revised Liquid Glass readability with a slider that lets users move between more transparent and more tinted interface treatments.
Ars Technica’s review identifies display support as one of the tangible gains for desktop users. macOS 27 adds native support for ultrawide displays up to 5K resolution at 120Hz, though Apple has not supplied a public chip-by-chip matrix for which configurations reach which resolution and refresh-rate combinations. The OS also extends HDR to the macOS interface itself, rather than limiting high dynamic range to video and supported content.
Those changes will matter more to users attached to third-party monitors than any new image-generation feature. The display story has been a longstanding friction point for Mac users compared with Windows’ broad monitor ecosystem, particularly at ultrawide resolutions and unusual refresh rates. Golden Gate improves the situation, but buyers should still validate the exact Mac, cable, dock, display input, scaling mode, and refresh rate before standardizing a workstation deployment.
Golden Gate also takes a restrained approach to advanced system control. Ars Technica found that Siri AI can perform some simple actions and use app data, but cannot directly manipulate many deeper settings, files, or administrative tasks. In a managed environment, that limitation may be a feature rather than a shortcoming: a broadly capable assistant with unrestricted filesystem and configuration access would introduce a very different security and audit problem.
The upgrade decision now comes down to a concrete choice. Apple Silicon Mac users can install macOS 27 for its display, search, interface, and maintenance improvements, while deciding separately whether to enable Siri AI. Intel Mac owners should use the remaining Tahoe or Sequoia support period to plan retirement, and every Apple Silicon deployment should use Golden Gate’s new Intel-app inventory before macOS 28 turns Rosetta 2 from a safety net into a compatibility exception.
