About this tag
PowerToys is Microsoft's expanding suite of power-user workflow tools for Windows, covering window management, clipboard enhancements, file previews, and more. Recent releases add local AI to Advanced Paste via Phi Silica, rebuild the Shortcut Guide, and introduce utilities like Grab And Move and Peek. Discussions highlight PowerToys as a safer alternative to riskier system tweaks, while noting that individual modules solve narrow Windows annoyances and may have specific conditions or compatibility requirements. The suite is often recommended alongside other utilities to address distinct Windows gaps, with an emphasis on understanding trade-offs before enabling features.

PowerToys Previews Windows Composition Welcome Animation With Reduced-Motion Support

PowerToys is getting a new Welcome page, and the pull request behind it has more detail than the first coverage did. Windows Central reports that a new Welcome screen is on the way to PowerToys. It also says the out-of-box experience (OOBE) uses a Windows feature called Composition, allowing it...

Raycast for Windows: AI and Snippets Outpace Command Palette

Raycast for Windows has reached stable release status, and XDA Developers is right that its paid AI tools, text-expansion Snippets, Quicklinks, and built-in extension catalog go beyond what the aging PowerToys Run utility offers. But the comparison needs one important correction for Windows...

PowerToys Workspaces Restores Apps, Not Snap Layouts

PowerToys Workspaces can rebuild a named set of Windows applications into saved positions, with optional command-line arguments, and that makes it useful for developers and IT staff who repeatedly assemble the same desktop after a reboot or context switch. But XDA’s September 16 account of using...

Toolfish 2.39 Fixes Windows Hotkeys, Drops Process Injection

Toolfish, a Windows tray utility first sold in 2002 and made open source in February 2026, has received a meaningful maintenance update that makes its hotkey-based automation less invasive than it was earlier this year. Version 2.39, released September 3, fixes hotkeys that could fail after...

PowerToys Command Palette Speeds Access, Not Windows Search

PowerToys Command Palette can put Windows settings, Registry navigation, WinGet package discovery, shell commands, file search, app launching, and browser searches behind one keyboard shortcut—but it does not replace Windows Search wholesale. PCWorld’s September 14 walkthrough correctly...

Windows 11 Auto Dark Mode: Hidden Code Is Not a Release

Windows 11 may be moving toward a built-in way to switch between light and dark themes automatically, but it has not arrived as a normal Windows feature. The evidence so far comes from hidden text and a system component identified in Windows 11 Experimental builds, not from a public Settings...

Windows 11 Snap Layouts: A Practical Guide Without Hype

Windows 11’s Snap Layouts are a genuinely useful built-in way to stop repeatedly resizing the same applications, but they are not a universal productivity multiplier. Their value depends on the number and shape of your displays, the applications you use, and whether your work benefits from...

Textify vs OCR for Copying Windows Interface Text

Windows has no shortage of text you can see but cannot select: a disabled dialog label, a status field, an old control panel-style interface, or a notification-like surface with no obvious Copy command. Textify targets that particular annoyance with a very small utility and a fast gesture. But...

Stardock AltTabby vs Windows 11 Alt+Tab and PowerToys

Windows 11 already has a capable Alt+Tab switcher, complete with live application thumbnails and an option to fold recent Microsoft Edge tabs into the task-switching list. That makes the case for a paid replacement less about fixing a missing Windows feature and more about reshaping a routine...

Should Windows 11 Bundle PowerToys, Ksnip and yt-dlp?

Windows 11 does not lack utilities so much as it distributes them unevenly: some are built into the operating system, some are available as separate Microsoft downloads, and others come from independent open-source projects. That distinction matters when considering three frequently suggested...

PowerToys 0.101 Adds Window Hopper to Switch Same-App Windows

PowerToys 0.101 is now the stable release, bringing a new same-app window switcher, a separate Insider update channel, and a substantial Command Palette overhaul to Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs. But the first detail to correct from Neowin’s report is the name: Microsoft’s release record calls...

Windows 11 KDE Workflow: PowerToys Setup and Ditto Risks

How-To Geek’s attempt to recreate a KDE desktop workflow on Windows boils down to four functions delivered by three installs: PowerToys for Command Palette and FancyZones, KDE Connect for phone integration, and Ditto for a deeper clipboard history. That is a practical starter kit for Windows 11...

Windows 11 Mouse Locator May Clash With PowerToys Screen Ruler

Windows 11 appears to be testing a replacement for the decades-old “show pointer location when I press the Ctrl key” effect, adding a persistent mode intended to keep the cursor highlight onscreen until the user dismisses it. But the proposed shortcut reported for that mode — Win+Ctrl+Shift+M —...

PowerToys 0.101 Fixes Command Palette Dock Display Loss

Microsoft released PowerToys Preview v0.101.2282.0 on August 17 with fixes aimed at a narrow but real pain point: Command Palette’s persistent Dock could lose its contents or settings when a laptop was docked or undocked, or after a Windows display-mode change using Win+P. The official GitHub...

QuickLook Installer Enables Windows Open/Save Dialog Previews

Windows 11 users who want macOS-style, spacebar-driven file previews can get them with the open-source QuickLook utility, but the installation method matters more than TechPP’s new guide suggests. The project’s own documentation draws a sharp line between its Microsoft Store package and its...

Windows 11 24H2 Makes 7-Zip Optional, Not VLC or Everything

How-To Geek’s case for installing VLC, 7-Zip, Everything, and Microsoft PowerToys on every Windows PC is persuasive—but the useful conclusion is narrower: these are four strong answers to four distinct Windows gaps, not a universal image to deploy without policy, maintenance, or a clear use...
