About this tag
Xbox mode is Microsoft's controller-first, full-screen gaming interface for Windows 11, introduced for handhelds and expanded to desktops, laptops, and tablets starting April 30, 2026. It offers a console-style experience that boots into an Xbox UI instead of the traditional desktop. Microsoft officially treats automatic Xbox Mode startup as a handheld feature, not a fully supported desktop-PC option. Recent Insider builds rename it to XBOX mode, a cosmetic change signaling strategic focus on unifying Windows, handheld PCs, and Xbox hardware. Xbox mode differs from Windows 11 Game Mode, which can sometimes reduce frame rates in CPU-bound games. The feature is part of Microsoft's broader PC gaming stack, including the Xbox app, Game Bar, and Game Pass.
