Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer made a surprise appearance on stage this morning at BlackBerry World 2011 to announce Bing will become the default search and map provider in all upcoming BlackBerry devices.
The recently released BlackBerry Playbook, for example, already ships with the Bing Map App and is the default search provider. But this new partnership goes one step further. According to BerryReview.com’s Ronen Halevy, who is at the event, “[Bing] will be integrated deep into the core BlackBerry OS”.
Though we are short on details on how this union will play out, it seems Microsoft is thinking “beyond a ’search box’ and links that rank URLs representing a set of web documents.” Bing director Matt Dahlin’s blog post on this partnership provides some hints as to what’s in store for BlackBerry users:
“Devices are becoming sensors that can provide real-time access to information to help people quickly complete tasks on the go. We’re going to see a convergence of search, commerce, social and location-centric services where Bing will provide the intelligence and the organizing layer in the cloud that connects a user’s intent with action, helping people be more productive.”
