?

Is there any hope for making my old desktop "futureproof"?

  1. Yes, although you may want to upgrade it more

This is a quick question, which I hope is easily answered.

I got a ATI FireGL V3100 graphics card for my Compaq Presario SR1819UK desktop computer so I could boost the performance.

Here is the overall specs (off my mind):

    AMD Sempron 3000+ 1.8GHz
    4GB DDR RAM
120GB Kingston SSD (Windows and Apps)
1TB WD Green HDD (Main Storage)
    ATI FireGL V3100 128MB PCI-E x16
    Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

It says when I try to upgrade it that the processor is incompatable, although I don't think that will deter me too much.

With the graphics card, it says there are no official drivers for it. Is it possible to use some older drivers to get it working and if so, can someone link me to a download link

I just hope I can get Windows 10 working at least 75% and I think I should take the free upgrade oppotunity before I lose out.

    Thanks

This worked for my ATI FireGL v3100.

    1) Download the legacy driver from ATI. (The newest was a 2009 Windows 7 driver with the download name: FirePro_8.583_Vista32_77159

    2) Open the download file so the contents extract. (Default folder is C:\AMD)

    3) Edit the INF file (CL_77159.inf) found in the extracted folder under Packages -> Drivers -> Display -> LH_INF

    3) Scroll down to
    [Manufacturer]
    %ATI% = ATI.Mfg, NTx86.6.0, NTx86.6.1,NTx86.6.2 <-- add this
    [ATI.Mfg.NTx86.6.0]
    "ATI FireGL V3100" = ati2mtag_RV370GL, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_5B64
    "ATI FireGL V3100 Secondary" = ati2mtag_RV370GL, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_5B74

    4) Scroll down to this and add what's in bold:
    [ATI.Mfg.NTx86.6.1]
    "ATI FireGL V3100" = ati2mtag_RV370GL, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_5B64
    "ATI FireGL V3100 Secondary" = ati2mtag_RV370GL, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_5B74

    5) Create a new section like this:
    [ATI.Mfg.NTx86.6.2]
    "ATI FireGL V3100" = ati2mtag_RV370GL, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_5B64
    "ATI FireGL V3100 Secondary" = ati2mtag_RV370GL, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_5B74

    6) Save CL_77159.inf

    7) Now you'll be able to install as a legacy driver.
Google: "Windows 10 install legacy driver" and follow directions.

Oh, and I doubt you'll be able to run the 64bit version of Windows 10, but you might get the 32 bit version to install.
