Hi, I am using windows 7 build 7100 on an Acer Aspire 8930G. My laptop has a built in fingerprint reader, with all the drivers installed.
It shows up correctly as a "Biometric Device" in the device manager, which says its installed properly.
However, in my control panel, the "Biometric Devices" option does not exist.

The fingerprint reader works fine with the "Acer Bio Protection" application, but I would prefer to use the built-in windows feature.

Solution
It seems like you're facing an issue with the Biometric Devices option not showing up in the Control Panel on your Windows 7 build 7100 Acer Aspire 8930G laptop, despite having the drivers installed for the fingerprint reader. Here are some steps you can try to potentially resolve this issue:

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check Group Policy Settings:
    • Sometimes, Group Policy settings can disable certain features. To check this:
      • Open the Start Menu, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter.
      • Navigate to: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Biometrics.
      • Ensure that all policies here are set to "Not Configured" or "Disabled".

    []Update Windows:
    • Ensure that Windows Updates are up to date. Sometimes, a system update can resolve compatibility issues and bring missing features back.
    [
    ]Reinstall Biometric Device Drivers:
    • Uninstall the current biometric device drivers from the Device Manager and reinstall them from Acer's official website, ensuring you download the correct drivers for your specific model.
    []Check Service Status:
    • Verify that the necessary services related to biometric devices are running. You can do this by:
      • Pressing Windows key + R, typing services.msc, and hitting Enter.
      • Look for services like "Windows Biometric Service" and ensure they are running.
    [
]Check for Third-Party Biometric Software Conflicts:
    • If you have any third-party biometric software installed (like Acer Bio Protection), there might be conflicts. Try disabling or uninstalling any third-party biometric software.
    []Run Hardware Troubleshooter:
    • Windows has built-in troubleshooters that can help identify and solve hardware issues. To run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter:
      • Open the Control Panel, go to Troubleshooting, then click on Configure a device.
    [
    ]BIOS Update:
    • Check if there are any BIOS updates available for your laptop on Acer's website and install them if needed. After trying these steps, restart your laptop and check if the Biometric Devices option appears in the Control Panel. If the issue persists, you may need to further troubleshoot or seek assistance from Acer's support. Feel free to try these steps and let me know if you need more specific guidance or further assistance!
