Hi there, I have an interesting problem with windows live messenger and windows 7. WLM wont start at all but in task manager it is running, but you cannot end the process. When you click to open WLM it starts a new process which you can end, but there is always one msnmsgr.exe which you cannot end.

Interestingly however, if I uninstall the antivirus software and restart the computer, WLM works absolutely fine! I have tried AVG, Avira Antivir and Avast and as soon as any of them get installed, WLM stops working and does what I explained above. I never experienced this problem until Windows was upgraded to Windows 7 Home.

I have tried everything to stop this. I have used Revo uninstaller to uninstall WLM and it's registry entries and re-install it, i have tried installing an older version of MSN, I have tried tinkering with the antivirus settings to see if that helps, but the only way I can get it to work is if I uninstall my antivirus! It just seems odd to me that it only happens when the antivirus is installed... what would cause these to conflict?

I'm using a laptop with 7 home premium 32bit. It is an Acer laptop (which has all of those built in programs that acer like to put on running...) It has a Turion single core processor, 4GB of RAM (although only 2.something GB of that is used) Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

It seems like you are facing a peculiar issue with Windows Live Messenger (WLM) on your Windows 7 system, where WLM doesn't start properly when certain antivirus software is installed. Here are a few insights and potential solutions to address this problem:

Possible Causes of Conflict Between WLM and Antivirus Software:

  1. Real-time Protection: The real-time protection feature in antivirus software may be conflicting with specific functionalities of WLM, causing it to malfunction.
  2. Firewall Settings: Antivirus programs often come with firewalls that could be blocking WLM from accessing necessary resources.

  3. Security Policies: The antivirus software might be enforcing strict security policies that interfere with WLM's operations.

    Solutions to Resolve the Conflict:

  4. Exclusion Rules: Try adding exceptions in your antivirus software for WLM executable files and folders to prevent interference with its operations.
  5. Firewall Configuration: Check the firewall settings in your antivirus program and ensure that WLM is allowed to access the internet and other necessary resources.
  6. Compatibility Mode: Try running WLM in compatibility mode, such as Windows Vista or XP compatibility, to see if it resolves the issue.
  7. Alternative Antivirus: Consider trying a different antivirus program to see if the issue persists with other security software.
  8. System Restore: If the problem started after a recent Windows update or installation of software, you might consider performing a system restore to a point before the issue occurred.

    Steps to Troubleshoot:

  9. Disable Antivirus: Temporarily disable your antivirus software and check if WLM runs smoothly. If it does, the antivirus is likely the cause.
  10. Event Viewer Analysis: Check the Event Viewer logs for any error messages related to WLM or the antivirus software that could provide more insights into the issue.
  11. Clean Boot: Perform a clean boot to start Windows with minimal drivers and programs running, excluding unnecessary startup items that could be causing conflicts.

    Additional Recommendations:

    • Ensure both Windows 7 and your antivirus software are up to date with the latest patches and updates.
    • Run a full system scan using your antivirus software to rule out any malware or conflicting software causing the issue.
If you've tried these steps and are still facing issues, please provide more details or logs for further assistance in troubleshooting this problem.
