Windows 7 64 bit: I’ve had a problem with a blank screen when the computer awakes from sleep. I’ve tried many things without success (startup program conflicts, graphic driver update, new graphic card, etc.) all to no avail. I’m about to install a clone of the hard drive that I made with Acronis about ten months ago. However, I’m concerned that the dark screen problem might be caused by one of the many Windows updates. Is this possible? I can turn off the automatic update before I reboot, but how should I then ignore all the updates that Windows suggests?

Solution
okay this could be your reason why desktop doesn't return after sleep / hibernation.

Event ID 7034 — Service Stop Operations

Service Control Manager (SCM) stops services and driver services.

this could be your graphic drivers have stopped working and thats why you get the blank screen you can try this fix http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc756320(v=ws.10).aspx,

if you follow the instructions and set the status to restart the service see if that works.

Event ID 10 "Event filter query functionality

this has nothing to do with this but if you want to fix it the instructions are here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950375

hope that works. let me know.
does it display any errors in the event viewer?

Yes there are a number of errors like: Event ID 10 "Event filter query functionality", Event 3036 (warning"; Event 7034 "Secure update serice terminated unexpectedly"; Event 1000 (not sure what that is). Don't know how to troubleshoot these. Reinstall Windows? Install my disk clone?
