Before upgrading to windows 7 I backed up all of my data onto an external HDD by (in XP) going Start, all programmes, Accessories, System tools, Files and Settings transfer wizard. It made a load of .DAT files in folder called USM2T.UNC. Can anyone now tell me how I'm supposed to restore these files in my windows 7? Also would be good if I could select only certain folders to be restored.

If it is not possible to do it within Windows 7 - is there a way that I can do on a XP but so that I can decide where the files are being outputted to (as in keep them on my external HDD so that I don't affect the computer I'm running the wizard on)?

Thanks

  1. Copying Files Directly:
    • You can try to directly copy the files from your external HDD to your Windows 7 system.
    • Simply locate the folder "USM2T.UNC" on your external HDD and copy the files to your desired location on your Windows 7 computer.
[]Using the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard in Windows 7:
    • Windows 7 has a similar tool called "Windows Easy Transfer" that allows you to transfer files, settings, user accounts, and more from a Windows XP or later system to your Windows 7 machine.

]Restoring on Windows XP with Custom Output Location:
    • You can restore the files on your Windows XP machine using the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard and then manually transfer them to your external HDD.
    • To specify the output location on your external HDD:
