Can't change privacy & security settings

Hi all

I've attempted to change my privacy settings on Microsoft / Xbox, and every time I save it and go back, it reverts to how it used to be. I can't talk on Minecraft servers despite being verified, and my settings won't stay as how I set them. Any advice is welcome. Thanks.

Hi Jemzawa — this usually happens when the account is being treated as a child/teen account or the settings are being changed on the wrong Microsoft/Xbox profile. Minecraft uses Xbox/Microsoft privacy settings for multiplayer and chat, even if you are not playing on an Xbox. Minecraft’s help pages specifically list multiplayer access and voice/text communication as Xbox privacy settings that control Minecraft servers/chat.

Try this first

1. Go to the Xbox privacy page in a private/incognito browser window.
2. Sign in with the same Microsoft account/gamertag used in Minecraft.
3. Check the settings under Privacy & online safety.
4. Set these to Allow/Everyone, where available:
• You can join multiplayer games
• You can communicate outside of Xbox with voice & text
• Others can communicate with voice, text, or invites
• You can create and join clubs
• Cross-network play, if shown
5. Click Submit/Save on each page/tab before leaving it.
6. Fully sign out of Minecraft, the Minecraft Launcher, Xbox app, and Microsoft Store.
7. Restart the PC/console.
8. Sign back in and test Minecraft again.

If the settings keep reverting

That strongly suggests one of these:
1. Your account is in a Microsoft Family group
• If the account is classed as a child/teen account, only the family organizer/parent account can change those Xbox privacy settings.
• Ask the organizer to change them through the Xbox Family Settings app or Microsoft Family Safety.
2. You are changing the wrong account
• Minecraft may be logged into a different Microsoft account than the one you are editing.
• Check the gamertag shown inside Minecraft and compare it with the gamertag on the Xbox privacy page.
3. Browser/session issue
• Try another browser.
• Clear cookies for microsoft.com, xbox.com, and live.com.
• Disable VPN/ad-blockers temporarily.
• Try saving from a phone or another device.
4. Minecraft has not refreshed permissions
• After changing settings, sign out of Minecraft completely and restart the game.
• Minecraft’s own help also recommends signing out/restarting to refresh chat permissions.
5. Console subscription issue
• If you are on Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch, Minecraft multiplayer may also require the relevant online subscription, such as Xbox Game Pass Core, Nintendo Switch Online, or PlayStation Plus.

If you are over 18

If your account should be an adult account but the settings still revert, check whether you are still listed under a Microsoft Family group. If so, leave the family group or have the organizer remove you. If the account age/date of birth is incorrect, you may need to contact Microsoft/Xbox Support, because privacy restrictions can be enforced server-side.

Quick questions

1. Are you playing Minecraft Java or Bedrock?
2. Are you on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, or mobile?
3. Is your Microsoft account part of a family group?
4. Do the settings revert immediately after saving, or only after you close/reopen the page?

I'm playing on Java, I'm on PC, my account is not a part of a family as of 20/6/2026, and it's after I close and reopen the page. I've had it sat open for an hour before doing so, and nothing seems to be doing anything.

Thanks, Jemzawa — that detail helps. Since you’re on Minecraft Java on PC and the Xbox privacy page only reverts after closing/reopening, this sounds less like a Minecraft issue and more like the Xbox/Microsoft account settings are not actually being committed server-side.
Because you left/changed family status on 20/6/2026, I’d also allow for a possible Microsoft/Xbox account propagation delay.

Most likely causes

1. Xbox still sees the account as restricted
2. The privacy page is saving locally but not syncing
3. You’re signed into a different Microsoft/Xbox profile somewhere
4. Family removal has not fully propagated yet
5. The account age/DOB still classifies it as underage
6. Microsoft account/Xbox privacy backend issue

Try this exact sequence

1. Go to Microsoft Family Safety and confirm your account is not listed in any family group:
2. Open an InPrivate/Incognito browser window.
3. Go directly to Xbox privacy settings:
• [Xbox Official Site: Consoles, Games and Community | Xbox](https://account.xbox.com/Settings)
4. Sign in with the same Microsoft account used in Minecraft Launcher.
5. Change these settings:
• You can join multiplayer gamesAllow
• You can communicate outside of Xbox with voice & textAllow
• Others can communicate with voice, text, or invitesEveryone or Friends
• You can create and join clubsAllow
6. Click Submit or Save.
7. Stay on the page for 30 seconds after saving.
8. Refresh the page with Ctrl + F5.
9. Confirm whether the settings remain changed after the refresh.
10. Then close the browser, reopen it, and check again.

If it reverts again

Do this next:
1. Sign out of these completely:
• Minecraft Launcher
• Xbox app
• Microsoft Store
• Any browser Microsoft/Xbox account sessions
2. In Windows, open Settings.
3. Go to:
Settings > Accounts > Email & accounts
4. Check whether a different Microsoft account is listed there.
5. Also check:
Settings > Accounts > Access work or school
6. Remove any old school/work/unused Microsoft accounts if they are not needed.
7. Restart the PC.
8. Sign back into Minecraft Launcher using the correct Microsoft account.

Check Minecraft Java chat settings too

Even if the Xbox side is fixed, Java can still block chat locally.
1. Open Minecraft Java.
2. Go to:
Options > Chat Settings
3. Make sure:
Chat = Shown
4. Restart the game after changing it.

Important note about leaving a family group

Since your account was no longer in a family as of 20 June 2026, I would give Microsoft/Xbox up to 24–48 hours to fully update the account permissions. If it still reverts after 22 June 2026, it is probably not just a delay.

If none of that works

At that point, contact Xbox Support and tell them specifically:
“My Xbox privacy and online safety settings appear to save, but after closing and reopening the page they revert. I’m using Minecraft Java on PC, my account is not in a Microsoft Family group, and the multiplayer/chat permissions will not persist.”
Ask them to check:
• Whether the account is still flagged as a child/teen account
• Whether a previous Microsoft Family restriction is still cached
• Whether Xbox privacy settings are failing to save server-side
• Whether the account DOB/adult status is correct
This does sound account-side rather than a PC or Minecraft installation problem.
