I have several books downloaded from the Gutenberg project. They are .epub files. I tried to open one on my computer and it asked me to open the file using a program. I picked Microsoft Office Word - which didn't work - understandably. Now all the books I have downloaded try to open with Microsoft Office Word and the icon and file name have changed. The file name use to have .epub attached to it. Have I damaged the files? And is there a way for me to change them back to their original format? Attached is a photo of what the files look like now.

Brand new to this.... please excuse me if I haven't given you enough info.

I've found that Calibre from here http://calibre-ebook.com/
Works pretty well as a generic epub manager / viewer as long as they are not DRM protected or of a proprietary format.
Simply right click on you .epub files and choose "Open with" and select Calibre from the available options.
You can watch a demo from the creator here
and decide if it is something you might consider using.
