I have a Dell Studio 1555 running Windows 7 32-bit that has stopping reading sd cards. When I insert an sd card in the internal slot, I can hear my computer recognizing it has been inserted, but then unrecognizing it as if it has been removed. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the initial driver, installing a different kind of driver (Ricoh), running Microsoft FixIt, Windows 7 updates and anything else I could find but nothing has worked.

1. Check the SD Card:

2. Device Manager:
- Open Device Manager by right-clicking on "My Computer" or "This PC" and selecting "Manage." Then, navigate to "Device Manager."
- Look for any devices with an exclamation mark or error message related to the SD card reader. If you find one, right-click on it and choose "Update Driver Software" to try to update the driver.
3. BIOS Settings:
- Access the BIOS settings of your laptop and check if the SD card reader is enabled. Sometimes, a BIOS update can also resolve hardware issues.
4. Reinstall SD Card Reader Driver:
- Uninstall the SD card reader driver completely from Device Manager and then reinstall it. Ensure you download the correct driver from the official Dell website for your specific model.
5. Windows Hardware Troubleshooter:
- Run the Windows Hardware and Devices troubleshooter. This tool can automatically identify and fix issues related to hardware.
6. Check for Physical Damage:
- Inspect the SD card slot for any physical damage or debris that may be causing a poor connection.
7. System File Checker:
- Use the System File Checker tool to scan and restore corrupted system files. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run the command: sfc /scannow.
8. Disable Power Management for the SD Card Reader:
- Go to Device Manager, find the SD card reader, right-click it, and go to Properties. In the Power Management tab, disable the option that allows Windows to turn off the device to save power.
9. Update System BIOS:
- Ensure that your laptop's BIOS is up to date. Check Dell's official website for BIOS updates specific to your Dell Studio 1555 model.
Try these steps one by one, testing the SD card reader functionality after each step. If the issue persists, it might indicate a hardware problem with the SD card reader itself, which may require professional inspection or replacement.
Feel free to try these steps out, and if you encounter any issues or need further assistance, please let me know!
