That is why the dedicated subdomain model exists in the first place.
The update also says that TCP and EDNS support will arrive for mail.protection.outlook.com in early Q3 2026. That is a useful modernization even if it is not full DNSSEC enablement, because it improves reliability and supports future cloud-scale security work. In other words, Microsoft is upgrading the transport substrate while leaving the older name in place for compatibility.

What this means for tenants​

For tenants, the message is that the DNSSEC path is becoming more specialized, not less. If your organization wants full inbound SMTP DANE with DNSSEC, you should expect to work with the new dedicated subdomains and the related tooling. If you are content with older DNS handling, Exchange Online will continue to support legacy paths, but that comes with a different security ceiling.
