This is going to be an easy fix I know but nearly every icon on my desktop changed to a windows media icon and if I launch any exe file, windows media launches instead. This happend whilst download/installing yahoo messenger. I have looked through defaults and cant find a fix. I created a new user account and its works fine. Does anyone know how to fix this ?

This is a known virus. If you don't have an AV, get one! Do a virus scan and get it cleaned. Even those who have AV this particular virus has managed to slip through. You should still update your virus definitions and do a complete scan.

Also, you can restore the EXE here:
Default File Type Associations - Restore - Vista Forums

cheers for response but I think this was me changing the exe association rather than a virus, i just dont know how to change it back in windows 7, could do it in all earlier versions, just windows 7 doent have .exe association in the default programs and I cant find it. This was done whilst installing messenger which I trust...... so ????

So click on the link I provided and follow the instructions for re-associating exe extensions.
