HP expands voluntary battery recall for laptops bought July 2007 to May 2008

There have been a string of voluntary battery recalls affecting HP laptops purchased between July 2007 to May 2008, with models added to the list each year since May 2009. The first recall began with Link Removed due to 404 Error and was then expanded last year in May to cover an additional 15,000 batteries sold in China.[/ZURL] A very small percentage of the affected laptops have batteries that may overheat, posing a serious fire hazard.

There have been no major reported incidents of exploding batteries, or anything close to the severity of exploding Dells from the previous decade. However, there were two recorded incidents of exploding batteries from May 2009.

•HP Pavilion: dv2000, dv2500, dv2700, dv6000, dv6500, dv6700, dv9000
•Compaq Presario: A900, C700, F500, F700, V3000, V3500, V3700, V6000, V6500, V6700
•HP: G6000, G7000
•HP Compaq: 6510b, 6515b, 6520s, 6710b, 6710s, 6715b, 6715s, 6720s

Hewlett-Packard Company, of Palo Alto, California, issued a recall May 27 for about 162,000 additional lithium-ion batteries used in HP and Compaq notebook computers (

54,000 and 70,000 batteries were previously recalled in May 2010 and May 2009, respectively).

The recalled lithium-ion batteries can overheat and rupture, posing fire and burn hazards to consumers.

Since the May 2010 recall expansion, HP has received 40 additional reports of batteries that overheated and ruptured, resulting in 7 burn injuries, 1 smoke inhalation injury, and 36 instances of property damage.

The batteries were sold at computer and electronics stores nationwide, hp.com, and hpshopping.com from July 2007 through July 2008.
