Introduce Yourself.

This application is telling me "The app you're trying to install isn't a Microsoft-verified app". When I try to compile. Any idea what I do?

Welcome to the forum, Brian!
The message "The app you're trying to install isn't a Microsoft-verified app" isn't as much about compiling as it is about installing an application that's not from the Microsoft Store or not signed by Microsoft. Windows is just being a bit overprotective to help users avoid potentially unsafe software.
Here’s how you can deal with it:

What’s happening?

  • Windows 10/11 has a setting that restricts app installations to "Microsoft-verified" (i.e., apps from the Microsoft Store or digitally signed apps).
  • If you’re compiling your own app or installing software from outside the Store, you’ll see this message.

How to get around it:

  1. Change App Installation Settings:
    1. Go to Settings > Apps > Advanced app settings (or just search for "Choose where to get apps").
    2. For "Choose where to get apps," set it to Anywhere instead of "The Microsoft Store only" or "Warn me before installing apps from outside the Store".
  2. Proceed Anyway:
    • Sometimes you’ll see an option like "Install anyway" (usually a small blue link under the warning). Click that to continue.
  3. If You’re Compiling:
    • If you’re running your own compiled code, make sure you’re opening the correct executable from your build folder and not an installer stub.
    • If SmartScreen or Defender blocks it, you might need to click on “More info” in the dialog and then “Run anyway.”

Note: Be sure you trust the source of your app before bypassing these warnings!
If you get stuck or need more step-by-step guidance, tell me:
  • Which version of Windows you’re using
  • What type of application you’re building (language/IDE)
I can tailor the steps for your scenario!

Hello! My name is Alexander. I'm 32 and live in Omaha, Nebraska in the middle of the United States.

If you have any security hardening guides for Windows 11/10 and Android 14+ , please send them my way!

Hi Alexander, welcome to the forum!
Great to have you here—and with such a proactive approach to security, too. I’d be happy to provide security hardening guides for both Windows 11/10 and Android 14+.
Here’s a brief overview for each, along with links and actionable steps. If you need more in-depth, step-by-step guides, just say the word!

Windows 11/10 Security Hardening (Essentials)

  1. Keep Your System Updated
    • Always install Windows Updates promptly—security patches are crucial!
  2. Microsoft Defender (or a Reputable Antivirus)
    • Keep Defender active or use a reputable third-party AV.
    • Regularly run full system scans.
  3. Enable BitLocker
    • Encrypt your drive via Settings → Update & Security → Device encryption or BitLocker.
  4. Apply the Principle of Least Privilege
    • Use a standard user account for daily work.
    • Only log in as an administrator when required.
  5. Windows Firewall
    • Keep it enabled and (optionally) tighten up outbound rules for extra control.
  6. Secure Windows Hello and Lock Screen
    • Use strong PINs or biometric authentication.
    • Set short timeouts for locking/screensaver auto-lock.
  7. Disable Unneeded Services & Features
    • Go to “Turn Windows features on or off” to disable unnecessary components, e.g., legacy protocols like SMBv1.
  8. Exploit Protection and Core Isolation
    • Settings → Privacy & Security → Windows Security → Device Security → Core Isolation.
  9. Application Control
    • Consider Windows Defender Application Control or, at a minimum, limit installation privileges.
  10. Network Security
    • Secure Wi-Fi with strong WPA3 (or WPA2) encryption.
Want a script-based or advanced, enterprise-grade hardening checklist? Let me know!

Android 14+ Security Hardening

  1. System and App Updates
    • Keep OS and all apps updated from the Play Store or OEM sources.
  2. App Permissions
    • Routinely review (Settings → Apps & notifications → App permissions).
    • Revoke permissions for unused apps.
  3. Biometric or Strong Passcode Lock
    • Avoid simple PINs. Use biometrics and/or complex passcodes.
  4. Enable Find My Device
    • Activate in Settings for remote tracking and wiping.
  5. Google Play Protect
    • Keep it on for background scan of malicious apps.
  6. Install from Trusted Sources Only
    • Don’t enable “Install unknown apps” except when absolutely necessary.
  7. Encrypt Device
    • Modern Android encrypts by default, but check in Security settings.
  8. Minimize Data Sharing & Ad Tracking
    • Limit personalized ads in Settings → Google → Ads.
    • Disable location when not needed.
  9. Disable Developer Mode When Not in Use
    • Only enable it when you really need to.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, but please note that promoting or linking to unauthorized streaming sites like 123 Movies or MovieBox can violate copyright laws and WindowsForum community guidelines.
For those looking to watch movies and TV shows online, I recommend exploring legal streaming options. These services ensure quality, security, and support for the creators behind the content you enjoy. If you have questions about setting up or optimizing legal streaming apps on Windows devices, feel free to ask—I'm here to help!

I appreciate your enthusiasm for streaming platforms and sharing your insights. However, as a reminder for everyone in this community, it's important to prioritize legal and safe streaming options to avoid risks such as malware, copyright infringement, and security issues.
For legal streaming, many platforms provide extensive catalogs of movies and shows with safe, reliable service—some even free with ads or available via subscription. If you're interested, I can help you find or set up legitimate streaming services on your Windows device, ensuring a safe and quality viewing experience.
Feel free to ask if you want recommendations for legal movie streaming or assistance with any Windows-related tech!

Be cautious with third-party links (like the .com URL you mentioned), as the official government site uses the .gov.in domain. For your safety and privacy, always access these essential government services through their verified portals! If you need help navigating the process, feel free to ask.

Hello, I am Luca from Italy and I live in Spain.
Although I am now a long time Linux user, I was once a power user in Windows, and now I don’t remember anything 😂
I will receive soon a laptop with Win 11 and I will have to keep it as it is, so I am on the boat again!

Hi Luca, welcome (back) to the Windows ecosystem—and welcome to the forum!
Don’t worry, the “Windows muscle memory” usually comes back faster than expected. Windows 11 has its quirks compared to classic versions, but coming from a Linux background, you’ll appreciate things like Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) and the new terminal. If you get stuck or run into any “Where the heck did they move this?!” moments, just ask!
When your new laptop arrives, let us know if you need help with tips, best practices, or surviving the world of Windows updates. And if you ever feel nostalgic for the terminal—PowerShell and WSL can be your new friends.
Happy to have you aboard!
