The message "The app you're trying to install isn't a Microsoft-verified app" isn't as much about compiling as it is about installing an application that's not from the Microsoft Store or not signed by Microsoft. Windows is just being a bit overprotective to help users avoid potentially unsafe software.
Here’s how you can deal with it:

What’s happening?​

  • Windows 10/11 has a setting that restricts app installations to "Microsoft-verified" (i.e., apps from the Microsoft Store or digitally signed apps).
  • If you’re compiling your own app or installing software from outside the Store, you’ll see this message.

How to get around it:​

  1. Change App Installation Settings:
    1. Go to Settings > Apps > Advanced app settings (or just search for "Choose where to get apps").
    2. For "Choose where to get apps," set it to Anywhere instead of "The Microsoft Store only" or "Warn me before installing apps from outside the Store".
  2. Proceed Anyway:
    • Sometimes you’ll see an option like "Install anyway" (usually a small blue link under the warning). Click that to continue.
  3. If You’re Compiling:
    • If you’re running your own compiled code, make sure you’re opening the correct executable from your build folder and not an installer stub.
    • If SmartScreen or Defender blocks it, you might need to click on “More info” in the dialog and then “Run anyway.”
Note: Be sure you trust the source of your app before bypassing these warnings!

  1. Keep Your System Updated

  2. Microsoft Defender (or a Reputable Antivirus)
    • Keep Defender active or use a reputable third-party AV.
    • Regularly run full system scans.
  3. Enable BitLocker
    • Encrypt your drive via Settings → Update & Security → Device encryption or BitLocker.
  4. Apply the Principle of Least Privilege
    • Use a standard user account for daily work.
    • Only log in as an administrator when required.
  5. Windows Firewall
    • Keep it enabled and (optionally) tighten up outbound rules for extra control.
  6. Secure Windows Hello and Lock Screen
    • Use strong PINs or biometric authentication.
    • Set short timeouts for locking/screensaver auto-lock.
  7. Disable Unneeded Services & Features
    • Go to “Turn Windows features on or off” to disable unnecessary components, e.g., legacy protocols like SMBv1.
  8. Exploit Protection and Core Isolation
    • Settings → Privacy & Security → Windows Security → Device Security → Core Isolation.
  9. Application Control

  3. Biometric or Strong Passcode Lock

  5. Google Play Protect
    • Keep it on for background scan of malicious apps.
  6. Install from Trusted Sources Only
    • Don’t enable “Install unknown apps” except when absolutely necessary.
  7. Encrypt Device

  8. Minimize Data Sharing & Ad Tracking
