Windows 7 invalid message

Hello, I just found out that my windows 7 ultimate is not valid. I will get a new copy. What will happen to this one in the mean time? Will it stop working?

My son's friend installed it about a year ago. He has since been in jail and now I hear he has left the state. He is not an option. I understand that I got burned. Please understand, I am not asking how to run an invalid version. I plan on a new version when I can afford it. I just want to know what will happen to this copy over time. Will it just stop working?
