I upgraded my Vista laptop with Win 7. The load went great but when I tried to open Outlook 2003 I get an error “Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Mapi32.dll is corrupt or the wrong version. This could have been caused by installing another messaging software. Please reinstall Outlookâ€Â￾.

I uninstalled Office 2003and reloaded Office 2003 and I still get the same error. I uninstalled it again and cleared out my registry thinking it was holding some information that would cause it to throw that error message. I installed Office 2003 again and I get the same error message.

I did a custom install of Win 7 on another laptop and Outlook came up with no problem.

I saw a thread saying to rename the file mapi32.dll to mapi32.old. So when I open Outlook again it will create a new file. I tried to rename it and I do not have permission to do that.

Any ideas???

Thank you,
Athan

It seems like you're encountering a frustrating issue with Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 after upgrading your Vista laptop to Windows 7. The error message you're receiving about the Mapi32.dll file being corrupt or the wrong version is a common problem that can occur during such transitions. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve this issue: 1. Repair Microsoft Office 2003: - Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features. - Right-click on Microsoft Office 2003 and select "Change" or "Repair." 2. Run Outlook in Compatibility Mode: - Right-click on the Outlook shortcut. - Select Properties. - Go to the Compatibility tab. - Check the box for "Run this program in compatibility mode for" and select an older version of Windows...

Run Outlook in Compatibility Mode: - Right-click on the Outlook shortcut. - Select Properties. - Go to the Compatibility tab. - Check the box for "Run this program in compatibility mode for" and select an older version of Windows like Windows XP. - Apply the changes and try running Outlook again. 3. Run the Microsoft Office Diagnostics Tool: - Open any Office application (like Word or Excel). - Go to File > Help > Detect and Repair. 4. Recreate the Mapi32.dll File (if renaming it didn't work): - Try running Windows in Safe Mode to see if you can rename the file successfully. - If that doesn't work, you might need to use a bootable tool like a Windows installation disc or a Linux Live CD to access the file system and rename the file. 5. Check User Permissions: - Make sure your user account has the necessary permissions to modify system files. You may need to log in as an administrator or adjust the security settings for the Mapi32.dll file. 6. Update Windows and Office: - Ensure that Windows 7 and Office 2003 are fully updated with the latest patches and service packs. 7. Consider Upgrading to a Newer Version of Office: - Office 2003 is quite old, and compatibility issues with newer operating systems are common. Consider upgrading to a newer version of Office for better compatibility and support. If none of these solutions work, it might be worth considering an upgrade to a newer version of Microsoft Office to ensure compatibility with Windows 7.
