Microsoft has recently announced the integration of Microsoft 365 Copilot Notebooks into OneNote for Windows, a move aimed at enhancing productivity for enterprise users. This integration allows users to consolidate various resources—such as Copilot Chat, files, notes, and links—into a unified workspace within OneNote.
Key Features of Copilot Notebooks in OneNote
Upon launching OneNote on Windows, users will notice the addition of Copilot Notebooks in the left-hand sidebar. This feature enables the creation and management of notebooks by navigating to Home > Create Copilot Notebook or selecting New notebook. During the setup process, users can assign a name to the notebook and incorporate reference materials, including OneNote pages, as well as files in .docx, .pptx, .xlsx, .pdf, or .loop formats. By providing these references, Copilot gains additional context, facilitating more precise and relevant responses.
Once a notebook is established with the necessary reference documents, Copilot Notebooks can assist in extracting insights, drafting summaries, and generating audio overviews. This functionality is particularly beneficial for comprehending complex subjects and producing more intelligent content.
Limitations and Considerations
It's important to note certain limitations associated with Copilot Notebooks:
  • Reference File Cap: Users are restricted to adding a maximum of 20 files as references.
  • OneNote Page Inclusion: Only individual OneNote pages can be added; entire sections or notebooks are not currently supported.
  • Feature Restrictions: Some OneNote functionalities are not operational within Copilot Notebooks, including tags, section groups, inking, templates, password protection, Immersive Reader, and offline support.
These constraints may be addressed in future updates, but as of now, they remain in place.
Availability and Target Audience
The integration of Microsoft 365 Copilot Notebooks in OneNote for Windows is available to enterprise customers possessing the appropriate licenses—specifically, those with Microsoft 365 Copilot, SharePoint, or OneDrive licenses. To utilize this feature, users must be running OneNote Version 2504 (Build 18827.20128) or later. This integration is tailored for enterprise clients and is not accessible to Personal or Family subscribers.
As this feature is currently in the preview phase, Microsoft encourages users to provide feedback via Help > Feedback within the application. This period presents an opportune moment for IT administrators and decision-makers to assess the feature's potential benefits for their organizations.
