Microsoft has announced the rollout of GIF export functionality in the Snipping Tool for Windows 11, starting with Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels. This update, version 11.2505.21.0, introduces a feature that allows users to convert screen recordings into GIFs directly within the application.
To utilize this new feature, users can initiate the Snipping Tool’s screen recorder by pressing Win + Shift + R or by launching the app and selecting the screen recording mode. After recording, the preview window now includes an "Export GIF" button in the top toolbar. Clicking this button prompts users to choose between low and high-quality GIF options before saving the file or copying it directly to the clipboard. It's important to note that GIF export is limited to recordings of 30 seconds or less; for longer recordings, only the first 30 seconds will be exported as a GIF.
This enhancement addresses a longstanding user request for more versatile sharing options within the Snipping Tool. Previously, users had to rely on third-party applications or online converters to create GIFs from screen recordings. By integrating this functionality natively, Microsoft simplifies the process, allowing for quicker and more efficient sharing of visual content.
The addition of GIF export complements other recent updates to the Snipping Tool, such as the introduction of AI-powered features like "Perfect Screenshot" and the "Color Picker." These enhancements reflect Microsoft's commitment to evolving the Snipping Tool into a more comprehensive and user-friendly utility. (blogs.windows.com)
As this feature is currently rolling out to Windows Insiders, broader availability is expected following the testing phase. Users are encouraged to provide feedback through the Feedback Hub to assist in refining the functionality before its general release.
