Microsoft has officially integrated its AI-powered cybersecurity platform, Security Copilot, into the Surface Management Portal (SMP) within the Intune admin center. This enhancement aims to streamline device management for IT administrators by providing faster, more intelligent insights without the need to switch between multiple tools.
Building upon the general availability of Security Copilot for Microsoft Entra—which focuses on identity, access, application protection, and posture monitoring—the integration into SMP introduces a conversational AI layer to device management. Administrators can now utilize natural language queries to extract pertinent information and perform actions efficiently. For instance, they can ask:
  • "Which devices are out of compliance and out of warranty?"
  • "Show devices with TPM disabled and BitLocker off."
  • "Estimate carbon emissions from our Surface fleet."
This integration consolidates data from Microsoft's hardware, firmware, and software ecosystems, creating a comprehensive, real-time context across Surface devices, Windows OS, Intune, and Security Copilot—all accessible within a single interface. As Rohan Brooker, a Microsoft representative, explained, this unified view enhances the efficiency of IT operations. (techcommunity.microsoft.com)
Feedback from administrators who participated in the preview phase indicates that the integration offers clearer insights and facilitates quicker actions. Tasks that previously required navigating multiple dashboards can now be executed with a single prompt, significantly reducing the time and effort involved in device management.
To activate this feature, IT professionals need to enable the SMP plugin and allocate Security Compute Units (SCUs) as specified in Microsoft's official documentation. Microsoft encourages users to provide feedback through the portal to assist in the ongoing development and refinement of the tool. (learn.microsoft.com)
The integration of Security Copilot into the Surface Management Portal represents a significant advancement in AI-driven device management, offering IT administrators a more efficient and intuitive approach to maintaining and securing their Surface device fleets.
