Microsoft has unveiled a significant update to Notepad, introducing built-in text formatting capabilities—a feature long requested by users. Starting June 2, 2025, Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels can test Notepad version 11.2504.50.0, which now includes a formatting toolbar for applying styles such as bold, italics, hyperlinks, headings, and lists directly within the app.
This enhancement aligns with Microsoft's ongoing efforts to modernize classic Windows applications while preserving their simplicity. The new formatting options are particularly beneficial for users working with Markdown, as Notepad now supports Markdown-style input and files. Users can toggle between a formatted Markdown view and raw Markdown syntax via the view menu or the status bar toggle button.
For those who prefer the traditional Notepad experience, the formatting features can be disabled in the app settings, allowing users to revert to plain text editing. Microsoft encourages feedback from early testers through the Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under Apps > Notepad.
This update is part of a broader trend of enhancing Windows 11's built-in applications. Notably, Notepad has recently received features like spellcheck and autocorrect, introduced in March 2024, and AI-powered rewriting tools announced in November 2024. (theverge.com, bleepingcomputer.com)
The introduction of text formatting in Notepad is a welcome development for users seeking more functionality without the complexity of full-fledged word processors. By integrating these features, Microsoft continues to balance modernization with the app's longstanding simplicity.
