Microsoft is poised to bridge the continuity gap between smartphones and PCs with the introduction of "Cross-Device Resume" in Windows 11, a feature reminiscent of Apple's Handoff. This functionality enables users to seamlessly transition activities from Android applications like Spotify or WhatsApp to their Windows 11 PCs, picking up exactly where they left off.
Apple's Handoff has long facilitated effortless transitions between iPhone, iPad, and Mac, allowing users to switch devices as naturally as shifting focus from one task to another. In contrast, Microsoft's previous attempts at continuity, such as the Phone Link system (formerly Your Phone) and Project Rome, have fallen short of delivering a comparable experience. The advent of Cross-Device Resume signals a significant step toward closing this gap.
Unveiled during the Build 2025 presentation, Cross-Device Resume operates by synchronizing app activity across devices via Microsoft's Phone Link app and a new Android companion system app called Cross Device Services. When fully implemented, Windows 11 will present suggestions in the Start menu or Taskbar that mirror ongoing activities on the user's phone. For instance, users can resume Spotify playback or continue a paused WhatsApp conversation with a simple click.
This development is particularly advantageous for Android users, offering a cohesive workflow that enhances productivity. While Apple maintains the most integrated ecosystem in the industry, Microsoft's strategy leverages Android's widespread adoption, strengthening Windows without necessitating control over both platforms.
During the event, Microsoft senior product manager Aakash Varshney demonstrated the feature by playing a song on an Android device, with a Windows 11 prompt offering to "continue where you left off," resuming the song from the same point. Although similar functionality is achievable through the Spotify app, Cross-Device Resume streamlines the process to a single click.
Despite its promising potential, this Handoff-style feature is not yet ready for public release. Microsoft has since removed it from the public-facing demo and has not provided specific reasons for this decision. Currently, the feature is not available for testing in the Windows Insider program, indicating that its release may still be some time away. A key consideration is the extent of support across third-party applications. Even Apple's Handoff does not function with every third-party app within its ecosystem. However, as the adage goes: build it, and they will come.
In summary, Microsoft's Cross-Device Resume represents a significant advancement in creating a seamless user experience between Android devices and Windows 11 PCs. While still in development, this feature has the potential to enhance productivity and user satisfaction by enabling effortless transitions between devices.
