Windows XP My os is Window xp sp3 and HDD is Nearly full And want to install a new HDD

Hello all my respected senior and junior members i have a problem
my os is window xp sp3
INTEL (R) Pentium (R) Dual CPU
E2140 @ 1.60 GHz
1.60 GHz, 2.00 GB of RAM
HDD is 500 GB SATA

lenovo mother board and i want to install a new hdd of 2TB or 1TB which will support
so please suggest me what i should have to do

Is this PC a retail store bought or a custom built PC? First I would check to see what type of HDD connections this PC has....eg IDE or SATA. Then find out the size limit of a HDD that mobo can use.

If your mobo has one or two available HDD ports open, I woud just install a 2nd drive (500GB) and use that drive for storage. Move all your music, docs, videos and all other data you want to keep. Then get rid of all the unwanted, unused software on primary HDD. Then clean that drive up.

My HDD setup: primary 320 GB for OS and Office, few games and other software that uses about 100 to 120 GB, then I have a 1 TB drive for storage....eg pictures, music, videos and all downloads set to save to the 2nd drive.

None of that answers any of my questions. With replies like that, you won't get much help!

If you have the connections and cables, just plug it in. Some say max for XP is 2TB, some witness they use 3TB HDD. No definitely absolute information here. According to OP you have SATA, so you should be able to upgrade, depending on Mobo, and how many disk connections it may have.

One good option is to get an external USB disk, it's just so easy to move.

Quite another thing is, all XP support ends in April 2014. After that, Internet connection is gone - you'll be dead pretty soon, since security updates are absent, and maggots will eat your system.

I understand that support for the OS will terminate when you stated, and no further updates from MS will be released, but internet connection gone??? I think not, the connection is governed by factors outside of the OS's control. Yes, it might be wise to limit the use of the internet to a degree, but since AV, malware, etc. detections is performed by third party programs that won't necessarily cease functioning in lock-step with MS, I think that one could continue to use the internet indefinitely, as long as one would deem the risk acceptable.

EDIT: Heck, you can still get Windows 98 software.

Internet connections will not be gone, technically, but they will be gone effectively, since protection is out. It's true you can still get Windows 98, but its lifetime on Internet is something like 2-5 minutes. After that it's dead and gone. You can still install Windows 95 and even 3.11, they will function in a closed environment, but I wouldn't introduce them to Internet, in an open space.

Third party programs cannot fix what can't be found in Windows OS, and since there is no support, you're out on your own. You need the fuel and engine, and since it's not there, your motor will stop.

About the acceptable risk, do consider the risk caused to fellow users. We are highly interactive, and one getting the flue easily leads to others getting it. We do have a common responsibility, just like with cholera.

Please document your statement about the time limitation of Windows 98 internet access time. The lack of support for the OS increases the vulnerability to someone being able to hack into a computer running it, but as to the exposure to AV, malware, etc., I do not believe that W98 would be any more vulnerable than current versions, becaue of third party protection. Also, since most of these types of malware are designed for specific OS types, Im not certain that W98 would be as vulnerable in the first place.

EDIT: If I were to use an unsupported version of Windows, I wouldn't want any sensitive personal data on it, nor would I use it to access any online resources that that would require protection, like a bank account or performing a financial transaction. I would also be more concerned with increased risk of ID theft.

There are no definite secure times, it's very much about opinions. But updates of security programs are not supported by older OS, thus the pyramid cracks.

I doubt that, or at least the feeling of security that opinion brings. Those who want to harass, and have the energy and will to produce harmful components, are certainly willing to create new versions - once you have the basics done, a new version is no big deal. I claim, present baddies are built on former baddies.

Sorry, but your going to have to translate this for me, something doesn't seem to jive. "There are no definite secure times"...define what you mean? "it's very much about opinions"...opinions about what? "Updates of security programs are not supported by older OS"...The security programs I was referring to are third party programs, which do not require support from the OS. On the other hand, those third party programs must be designed to be compatible with the OS. Apparently, we are speaking in a fashion that neither of us understand.

Those who want to harass, and have the energy and will to produce harmful components, are certainly willing to create new versions - once you have the basics done, a new version is no big deal. I claim, present baddies are built on former baddies.

You are correct that it is easy for malware to operate on W98 or XP, if not protected. But it should also be kept in mind that hackers tend to go for the bigger target...the current version(s) of Windows. Many people feel that Linux distros are safer, but the fact is that the only reason that they have less problems with malware, is because there isn't enough Linux users to make a attractive target for them.

It's about opinions and experience. There is no way to tell the exact secure time - will it be 2 minutes, or 444 seconds, or 4444 seconds. It's impossible to foretell. The fact is, it's risky.

To mention one example, http://support.kaspersky.com/8746, it goes with XP, but since security is not only about AV programs and such, but highly about OS functions, the basic is the need of OS security. Threats from outside are sort of extra, treated by other programs. Like, you have a lock on the door - but if you don't have the door...?

Old is old, period.

I remember, in 1990's, the British Navy discussed about getting Windows systems for their submarines, both defense and attack. It caused some worries, What if the system crashes? What if defense fails? What if missiles go to attack, due to power failure? What if... what if...? I don't have references for this, and I can't tell what decisions they made. All I can say is, we haven't got the whole ballgame - good for us.

Why is it that you never documented your assertion regarding the amount of time on the internet, before W98 or XP (after it support termination) would go dead, but only continued making further assertions in the same vein? I am not attempting to encourage anyone to use an outdated OS, but I'm not going to let you discourage anyone based simply on your own opinions.

There is no definite information. It's like BSODs and other problems, in most cases they can be solved, but not in all. It's quite simply the wetland we live in.

About opinions, YOU give some exact facts? Defined by technical IT facts? Eh? I say they don't exist. Because it's not a scientifically exact environment! If it was, like gravity or volt x ampere = watts, we wouldn't have crashes.

It is all highly relative.

Not exactly sure what "facts" that you are referring to? I have no problem with anyone making statements, supported or not, if those statements are not patently false. I can only conclude that you are unable to document your statement regarding the internet "time switch" on MS's discontinued OSs because there is none.

I've studied the subject, and still, there is no definite information. You can check http://www.betaarchive.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=29447 and others.

You can do what you want, but I wouldn't go in communication with Windows 98 - consider it a personal opinion, I consider it to be an issue of security.

The main question is not, perhaps, about Antivirus and such, but about Windows security. If Microsoft doesn't guarantee it, are you the one to do it? You say, hackers won't get me?

I admit the timetable was a bad, it was apparently about an unprotected system.

What Pauli said is not correct. Yes support for Windows XP is ending in April 2014. windows XP users will still be able to connect to the Internet as long as they have an Internet connection . Though you will no longer get updates, though it may be possible to install them manually online from Microsoft website. Also if you want to switch to Windows 7 or 8 you can transfer most of the software from Windows XP onto Windows7 and 8 and it still works.

In fact I have got windows XP Sound recorder,Windows XP Paint,Wordpad, screensaver and even the Windows XP sound scheme running on Windows 8. All come from my windows XP computer and what's more they world. Oh I forgot so does Mplayer32-WMP5.1 and Clipboard or Clipbook, all from Windows XP working on Windows 7 and 8.

As for running Windows 98 I did not think that could connect to the Internet at least not with wireless broadband but according to that link it does. Though have never used Windows 98 myself. One problem with Windows 98 is that you are stuck on IE6 as that's the highest version of IE it will run. Where as with Windows XP at least you can upgrade to IE8.

Internet connections will not be gone, technically, but they will be gone effectively, since protection is out.
What I have tried to make a point of, IT is a stream, and it goes forward. The only way to follow the stream is, surprise surprise, to follow it. My wording may not have been the best, and that I apologize. But in order to hang on, you can't stay with old things, you simply have to accept the fact that you must upgrade and update, right after you have done that. Why, you can still use a Commodore 64! Like you can drive a T Ford! Or shoot a Winchester! Do it, but take general safety under consideration.

What I don't apologize, is to have created some discussion about a matter that is truly important. To stir is a way to create thoughts and ideas, oftentimes fruitful. Something everyone won't like, but it's there. And I never stirred intentionally. And to awaken a few brains, that's hardly a bad thing!

http://www.itviikko.fi/teknologia/2...a-pahaan-pulaan--syyna-windows-xp/201311054/7 is a Finnish page, quote

"Huhtikuun 8. päivän jälkeen valtaosa maan tietokoneista pyörii käyttöjärjestelmällä, joka on turvaton. Tiedossa saattaa olla uusien haittaohjelmien epidemioita, kun rikolliset pyrkivät hyödyntämään tilannetta."
"Yli 1,3 miljardin asukkaan maa onkin joutumassa todellisiin tietoturvaongelmiin Microsoftin päätöksen vuoksi."

meaning

"After April 8th the majority of computers [in China] will run on an OS that is safeless. It may lead to epidemics of new malware, as criminals try to take advantage of the situation".
"The nation of over 1.3 billion citizens is probably going towards huge security problems due to Microsoft's decision".

They consider XP to be a potential threat, period. I'm not trying to launch a Y2K phenomenon, period #2.

The only way to be safe is to know you are safe. That's why I have bought and paid for several security programs. As well as Windows 7 Professional.

The time to look in the mirror, for many? Perhaps engineers and programmers have done their part of the deal, to make us all more comfortable? Perhaps users should provide? ... I'll probably get dislike or hatred for the latest, but who cares?

My simple and honest opinion is that, in order to get, one needs to provide. Bingo.

Ah, came to mind, Neville Chamberlain's words ~ Hitler is no threat, he's a jolly good fellow. No threats we have, do we?
