I have a Windows 7 laptop wi-fi'ed to my Windows 7 desktop, both recently upgraded from Vista. The printer on the desktop is network-shared. On the desktop, under Power Options, Sleep, "allow wake timers" is enabled. Printing from the laptop under Vista could occur whether the desktop was awake or asleep. Now, under W7, printing occurs only when the desktop is awake. On the desktop, under Printer Properties, "sharing" tab, it reads: " The printer will not be available when the computer sleeps. To change these settings, use the Network and Sharing Center." However, I can find no option there to allow waking the desktop on a print request from the laptop.
How can I cause the desktop to awake on a laptop print request?

Solution
To enable waking up the desktop on a print request from your laptop, you can configure the desktop to allow wake timers for network activity. This feature will allow the desktop to wake up from sleep mode when a print request is received from the laptop. Here are the steps to adjust this setting: 1. Enable Wake Timers on the Desktop: - Go to the Control Panel on your Windows 7 desktop. - Navigate to "Power Options" and select it. - Click on "Change plan settings" next to your selected power plan. - Click on "Change advanced power settings." - In the Power Options window, expand the "Sleep" option. - Find the sub-option "Allow wake timers." Make sure it is enabled. 2. Configure Printer Sharing: - Go to the Control Panel on...

Configure Printer Sharing: - Go to the Control Panel on your Windows 7 desktop. - Navigate to "Devices and Printers" and select it. - Right-click on the shared printer and choose "Printer Properties." - Go to the "Sharing" tab. - Check the box that says "Share this printer." - Ensure that the option "The printer will not be available when the computer sleeps" is unchecked. If it's checked, uncheck it. 3. Advanced Sharing Settings: - Go to the Network and Sharing Center on your desktop. - Click on "Change advanced sharing settings" on the left-hand side. - Expand the "Home or Work" network profile. - Make sure that "Turn on network discovery" and "Turn on file and printer sharing" are enabled. - Also, ensure that "Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers" is selected. 4. Configure Wake-on-LAN (Optional): - You can also set up Wake-on-LAN (WoL) on your desktop if the above steps do not work reliably. This feature allows you to wake up your computer remotely over the network. Make sure your motherboard supports this feature and it's enabled in the BIOS settings. By following these steps, you should be able to configure your desktop and laptop to allow waking up the desktop on a print request from the laptop. If the issue persists, you may also want to check the network settings and firewall configurations to ensure proper communication between the devices.
