Yesterday was the first time that I tried to use my laptop with Windows 7 on battery. I upgraded 7 from vista as soon as it was available. I got it down to 49% but then when I plugged it back in to charge, it wouldn't charge. It would simply say that it's plugged in and not charging. I know in Vista, there was a way to set the battery settings so that it would charge if it was under a certain percent. Is there a way to do that in 7? What's going on?

Solution
It seems like you are experiencing an issue with your Windows 7 laptop where it shows "plugged in, not charging" after you plugged it in to charge. This issue can be caused by various factors, including software settings or hardware-related issues. Here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot this problem and possibly resolve it:

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check the Power Adapter and Battery Connection:
    • Ensure that the power adapter is properly connected to both the laptop and the power outlet.
    • Check the AC adapter for any signs of damage. Try using a different power outlet to rule out electrical issues.

    • Ensure that the power adapter is properly connected to both the laptop and the power outlet.
    • Check the AC adapter for any signs of damage. Try using a different power outlet to rule out electrical issues.
    []Restart Your Laptop:
    • Sometimes a simple restart can resolve temporary issues. Try restarting your laptop and see if the battery starts charging.
    [
    ]Update Battery Drivers:
    • Outdated or corrupted battery drivers can cause charging issues. Update the battery drivers through Device Manager:
      • Right-click on the "Battery" option in Device Manager and select "Update driver."
    []Reset Power Management:
    • Resetting power management settings can sometimes resolve charging problems:
      • Open the Device Manager.
      • Under the "Batteries" section, uninstall the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery driver.
      • Restart your laptop to reinstall the driver automatically.
    [
    ]Check Power Settings:
    • Windows 7 allows you to customize power settings. You can check the power plan settings to ensure they are configured correctly:
      • Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
      • Select your preferred power plan and click on "Change plan settings."
      • Ensure that settings related to charging thresholds are correct.
    []BIOS Update:
    • Updating your laptop's BIOS can sometimes resolve hardware-related charging issues. Check your laptop manufacturer's website for BIOS updates and follow their instructions to install them.
    [
    ]Replace the Battery:
    • If none of the above steps work and your laptop is old, the battery might need replacement.

Setting Battery Charging Threshold in Windows 7:

The ability to set battery charging thresholds is not a built-in feature of Windows 7. However, some laptop manufacturers provide their own software that allows users to set charging thresholds. You can check if your laptop manufacturer offers any software for managing battery settings. If you provide the make and model of your laptop, I can assist you in finding the relevant software for setting charging thresholds. After going through these steps, if the issue persists, it might be best to consult a technician for a thorough hardware inspection and repair.
