My computer was slower than normal to boot for a while, it would stay on the Welcome... page for about 12secs (a long time). I turned on verbose messages, and it turns out, its "preparing my desktop" on each boot.

Two questions

  4. Windows Update Issues: Pending Windows updates or failed update installations can lead to slow boot times.
  5. Antivirus Software: Overly aggressive antivirus software scanning during boot can cause delays.
  6. Hardware Issues: Failing hardware components like a hard drive or SSD can slow down the boot process.

Steps to Fix Slow Boot and "Preparing your desktop" Issue:

  7. Check for Malware: Run a full scan with your antivirus software to ensure your system is not infected.
  8. Clean Boot: Perform a clean boot to determine if a third-party software is causing the delay.
  9. Update Windows and Drivers: Ensure Windows and device drivers are up to date.
  10. Check Disk for Errors: Use the built-in Windows tool, CHKDSK, to check for and repair disk errors.
  11. Check System Resource Usage: Monitor resource usage during boot to identify any bottlenecks.
  12. Disable Startup Programs: Use Task Manager to disable unnecessary startup programs.
  13. Create a New User Profile: Create a new user profile and check if the issue persists to rule out profile corruption.
  14. Defragment or Optimize Drives: Use the built-in Windows tool to defragment or optimize your drives.
  15. Check Hardware: Run diagnostics on your hard drive or SSD to check for any hardware issues. By following these steps, you should be able to diagnose and resolve the slow boot and "Preparing your desktop" issue on your computer. Let me know if you need more detailed instructions on any of the steps outlined above!
