Windows 7 Random BSOD has me puzzled

I have been experiencing BSOD issues for the last month or so. It all started the day before a programming competition right after I freshly installed the latest distro of Ubuntu. I had several crashes the next few days and I wasn't able to pin down the issue. Computer ran fine for a week then started BSOD again to the point where Windows wouldn't finish loading before a BSOD occurred. The BSOD error is Memory Management. My first thought was bad ram. I ran Windows memory diagnostics and got an error. Reseated the memory ran overnight and no errors. I then ran memtest all day long with no errors returned. Still unable to boot. I reinstalled Win7 probably 3-4 times that week and still had BSOD issues. I then took my disk utils, zeroed out the disk, and reinstalled WIn7. For the last 3 weeks it's been working fine until the other day, BSOD Memory Management. Now i'm completely stumped. The only suggestion I've had that makes sense is that my mobo may be failing .001% of the time. This is very strange since I have not changed my hardware setup in over a year since it was built. I tried using the windows debugger but I am unfamiliar with it. I attached the dmp files in case that helps.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and Welcome !

Seems like most of the Dumps are pointing to Memory. Run a Hardware Diagnostic (Memory and Hard Drive) follow this link for instructions Link Removed - Invalid URL

Update the Following Drivers:
Code:
xpc4drvr.sys Wed May 09 00:24:53 2007
windrvr6.sys Wed Feb 28 15:18:39 2007
ASACPI.sys Mon Mar 28 08:00:36 2005

Follow this link for updating the Drivers : Drivers and Downloads

As for ASACPI.sys go to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers and find ASACPI.sys and rename it to ASACPI.old and reboot the System.

Post us the results !

Hope this helps,
Captain

Please post a screen shot of CPU-Z spd and memory tabs to determine if the bios is set well or not. Usually in these cases, it is not and is the issue.

Install my attachment to update the ATK0110 driver, ASACPI.sys.

------------------

Also update the very old problematic Marvell Yukon ethernet driver. Look in the device manager for it's type, then download/install from here:

yk62x64 yk62x64.sys Mon Feb 23 10:02:27 2009

-----------------------

Update all Logitech drivers for all gear you have:

LMouFilt LMouFilt.Sys Wed Jun 17 12:49:43 2009
LHidFilt LHidFilt.Sys Wed Jun 17 12:49:39 2009

Logitech

-----------------

Must also update the Broadcom Bluetooth drivers:

btusbflt btusbflt.sys Wed Aug 27 21:12:08 2008

-------------------

And of course, take care of those other 2 files Captain mentioned.

So I updated all of the drivers you listed and ran memtest and seatools without any problems reported. The computer has been running fine for the last week until today when it started BSOD again. The first one was a system_service_exception then a memory_management one again, then I got another strange one before the computer would even finish booting up. Not sure what that one was for. I couldn't get the computer to boot and let it sit for a couple of hours. I just came home and tried booting and it started up this time so I am starting to wonder if it is a thermal hardware issue. It only seems to be having issues if I leave it on for a long time.

I attached the new mini-dumps and also the screen shots that you requested.

Thanks!

Your timings are wrong in the bios for the RAM, causing your issues. Set it to 5-5-5-18-23 and save.

You'll also want to uninstall Jungo because of this ancient driver:

windrvr6 windrvr6.sys Wed Feb 28 04:48:39 2007

Same for Xilinx software:

xpc4drvr xpc4drvr.sys Tue May 08 14:54:53 2007

---------

Uninstall Daemon Tools then use this installer/uninstaller to remove sptd.sys. Click on Uninstall while using:

DuplexSecure - Downloads

Reboot and install PowerISO to replace it.

When I bought the memory those were supposed to be the timings for them. I see them in the 3rd column in CPU-z? Also, those settings have been that way for the past year without any issues?! I have no idea what Jungo is but I need to make sure I am not using the xpc4drvr because I need the Xilinx software for FPGA development. What do you use to analyze the dmp files... windbg? I downloaded that but I have no clue where you get the driver information from?

Nope. The timings are what I said and the machine should be set to them to be well.

Those drivers from before July 2009 really need to be removed for a stable machine as well. Just being honest here, I'm not overly interested in why or why not you may need some software. (The reason why or why not bears no effect on stability, so I don't need to be involved in that part of decision making.) I give a report on why the machine is failing and I'm awesome for being able to do so, and actually doing it. :)

I'm simply saying what needs to be done for a stable machine and the decision for the action or inaction to apply the changes is solely yours to make.

Best of luck.

If you want to overclock your machine, then again, the tweaking and adjustments are yours to make. My only purpose in these bsod threads is to provide stability when there is none. I don't wish to be the overclocking guide on top of that.

Thanks, I really do appreciate the quick support. Can you answer me though on what you are using to look at the dmp files or how to get that driver info from them? I am interested in learning more about crash analysis.

Sure thing. Always willing to help out people wanting to sincerely learn.

This is the thread you want to follow precisely to get things set up, written by my colleague and the master of bsod analysis if there ever was one (H2S04):

Configuring the "Debugging Tools" - Windows 7 Forums

Once you have a crash dump opened, you can run this command at the bottom to see all drivers:

lmtn

or for alphabetical order:

lmsmtn

and to see more info like the actual location of a driver:

lmvm drivername

for examples:

lmvm nvlddmkm <<<< (NVIDIA video driver)

or

lmvm NETIO <<<< (Windows 7 network driver)

Feel free to p.m. me about any questions on techniques or whatnot. If you are still interested, you're more than welcome to begin trying to help out in threads....you'll really learn quickly enough that way because I can sort of guide you on something that may have been said wrong, or concur with what is right.

Enjoy.

So I changed the memory timings and removed the Xilinx software to test and windows explorer kept crashing, eventually leading to another memory management BSOD.

Is it possible that my files are corrupt from the bad memory timings and possibly causing the BSOD?

Wrong set memory quite often causes BSOD's.

No, my system is not over-clocked. I ran memtest again tonight and it came up with errors on the first pass. I pulled the ram and swapped it and the sticker on the ram had the timings as 4-4-4-12??!

I put the ram back in and I am running memtest overnight to check for errors again.

Let the test run upto 8 passes. According to MemTest guide a single error indicates bad Memory. Changing voltages, timing sometimes fixes it. If not it is better to send for RMA.

Hope this helps,
Captain

So I got a new blue screen last night I had not seen before. This was after installing a fresh copy of Win 7 again. I ran memtest afterwards and got 170,000+ errors on the first test. I turned it off for a few minutes then back on and ran memtest again for the last 5 hours (7 passes) with 0 errors!! Can you please look at the dump file and see if there is any new information??

Posting crash dumps is not going to help in any way when your memory is set wrong in the bios or defective, which you've already been told.

So it is on you (not us looking at crash dumps any longer, especially when you've wasted our time and re-installed Windows again which was a drastic step in the wrong direction) to make sure it is set well in the bios, as I've previously showed you.

If even one error shows in Memtest after, replace the RAM with a matching set.

Good luck with how you get on with it.
