Initiating a remote desktop session from Windows 7 to a Win XP Pro or a Win 2k3 Server machine freezes.
After entering the credentials the Windows welcome screen freezes after 1/3 of the screen has build up, resulting in a time-out error message. Making the same connection from within a Win XP machine just works fine.
After changing some RDP-settings, sometimes the connection fully establishes but this is not reproducable.

A compatibility problem with RDP client???

Solution
The issue you are facing with initiating a remote desktop session from Windows 7 to a Windows XP Pro or a Windows Server 2003 machine freezing after entering credentials might indeed be related to compatibility problems with the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) client. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve this issue: 1. Update RDP Client: Ensure that both the Windows 7 machine and the target machines (Windows XP Pro and Windows Server 2003) have the latest Remote Desktop Protocol client updates installed. This can help address any compatibility issues. 2. Compatibility Mode: You can try running the Remote Desktop client in compatibility mode. Right-click on the Remote Desktop shortcut, go to...

Right-click on the Remote Desktop shortcut, go to Properties, and then navigate to the Compatibility tab. Check the box for "Run this program in compatibility mode for" and select an appropriate operating system like Windows XP. Apply the changes and try connecting again. 3. RDP Security Settings: Check the security settings on the target machines (Windows XP Pro and Windows Server 2003). Ensure that Remote Desktop connections are allowed and that the correct users have permission to connect remotely. 4. Network Configuration: Verify the network configuration on all machines to ensure there are no issues with communication between them. Check firewall settings and ensure that the necessary ports for Remote Desktop (TCP port 3389) are open. 5. Group Policy and Registry Settings: There might be specific Group Policy settings or registry configurations that could be causing the freeze. Ensure that the settings related to Remote Desktop are configured correctly. 6. Event Viewer Logs: Check the Event Viewer logs on both the Windows 7 machine and the target machines for any related errors or warnings that could provide more insight into the issue. 7. Alternative Remote Desktop Software: If the issue persists, you may consider using alternative remote desktop software that is known to work well across different Windows versions. By following these steps, you should be able to troubleshoot the freezing issue when connecting from Windows 7 to Windows XP Pro or Windows Server 2003 machines. If you continue to experience problems, please provide more details for further assistance.
