Hi,
We have a network of Windows 7 computers. Group X wants to share their files between each other without sharing with others outside Group X? How can they do that? We don't have Active Directory.

Thank you for your answers.

Solution
To facilitate file sharing within Group X without the use of Active Directory on Windows 7 computers, you can set up a workgroup and configure the network sharing settings. Here's a step-by-step guide on how Group X can achieve this:

Step 1: Create a Workgroup

  1. On each computer in Group X, go to Control Panel.
  2. Navigate to System and Security > System.
  3. Under "Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings," click on "Change settings."
  4. Click the "Change" button and select the "Workgroup" option.
  5. Enter the same workgroup name on all computers within Group X (e.g., "GroupXWorkgroup") and restart the computers when prompted.

  6. Choose the files or folders that Group X wants to share.
  7. Right-click on the file or folder and select "Properties."
  8. In the "Properties" window, go to the "Sharing" tab.
  9. Click on "Advanced Sharing."
  10. Check the box for "Share this folder."
  11. Click on the "Permissions" button to define who within the workgroup can access the shared files.
    • Add the users from Group X and set their permissions (Read/Write) accordingly.
[]Click "OK" to save the changes.

    Step 3: Access Shared Files

    [
]On each computer, navigate to the "Network" or "Network and Sharing Center." []Group X members should see the shared computers and folders under the workgroup name. []They can access the shared files by double-clicking on the computer's name and entering the credentials if required.

    Additional Tips:

    • Ensure that file and printer sharing is enabled in the network settings.
    • Disable public folder sharing to restrict access.
    • Regularly review and update permissions on shared files and folders as needed.
By following these steps, Group X can securely share files within their network of Windows 7 computers without sharing them with users outside their group. If you encounter any issues or need further assistance, feel free to ask!
