Windows 7 Slow and Slower

I have a Windows 7 Home Premium , 64-bit OS, Acer Aspire 5253, 3GB Ram,AMDC-50 Processor, 1 GHz, with
Internet cable modem, with 10mb download speed. My GF with a similar Notebook PC uses the building's Wi-fi network, via my router and the speed is 5X faster than mine. Whether I'm using a Windows program like Word or Open Office or Windows Photo Gallery, etc. or the Internet(I have I/E, Firefox and Torch/Chrome), startups, surfing the net, E-mail, all show up slow. One tech guy at the local electronics store told me to remove Windows and reinstall it(I have a legal version). Another guy said to upgrade from 3GB Ram to 4.
What to do?

Try doing a full scan in Safe Mode with Malwarebytes free and your antivirus. Remove everything either find. Then run disk cleanup and Ccleaner. Afterwards run disk defragmenter and see how things are. Then if you're not satisfied do the 2 suggestions you received earlier. Malwarebytes free www.malwarebytes.org Ccleaner free http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner (just click on download and you'll get the free version. Press F8 key repeatedly and select Safe Mode, when you first turn it on and run everything I suggested. Make sure you have updated definitions for Malwarebytes and your antivirus first, before doing that.

3 gigs of ram isn't that much any more. The OS uses a lot of that sitting idle. If the above steps don't help you can look into increasing ran. Also make sure you don't have a lot of software run at startup that isn't necessary. Check Blackviper http://www.blackviper.com/ there maybe some uneeded services you can disable too.

I have had (and regularly use) CC Cleaner. I have had Malwarebytes , but recently deleted it in favor of Avast, because 10's of thusands more downloads for it. I also have Wise Disk Cleaner. Should I reinstall Malwarebytes? I understand it's not good to have more than one anti-virus program...
