I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate through the House Party program. Everything installed fine, but neither optical drive is recognized in Explorer or through inserting a DVD and waiting for the autorun to take over. I do see the drives in Device Manager and with Disk Management. When I insert the Windows 7 DVD, however, the autorun works and I can reload the operating system, which I did with the same results. I tried putting a disk in right after the drive became "visible" with the operating system disk, and it couldn't not be read. The only disk that can be read is the Windows 7 install disk. I've tried uninstalling the drives, and they are later found by Windows, named correctly, but I still can't use them. Please help!
Thanks,
Brian

Brian, it seems like you are facing issues with your optical drives not being recognized properly by Windows 7 Ultimate, except for the Windows 7 installation DVD. This could be due to various factors, such as driver issues, configuration settings, or hardware problems. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue:
  1. Update or Reinstall Drivers:
    • Check if there are any driver updates available for your optical drives. You can do this by going to Device Manager, right-clicking on the optical drive, and selecting "Update driver."
    • If updating the drivers doesn't work, try uninstalling the drivers completely and then restarting your computer. Windows should automatically reinstall the drivers upon...
Windows should automatically reinstall the drivers upon reboot.
    []Check Autoplay Settings:
    • Ensure that Autoplay settings are configured correctly. You can do this by typing "Autoplay" in the Start menu search box and adjusting the settings for different types of media.
    [
    ]Check Registry Settings:
    • Incorrect registry settings can sometimes cause issues with optical drives. Be cautious when editing the registry. To check:
      • Press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter.
      • Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0.
      • Check if a value named EnumDevice1 exists. If it does, right-click and delete it.
      • Restart your computer after making any changes.
    []Check BIOS Settings:
    • Enter your computer's BIOS settings (usually by pressing a key like F2 or Del during startup) and ensure that the optical drives are detected and enabled.
    [
    ]Test with Different Discs:
    • Try inserting various types of discs (DVDs, CDs) to see if the issue is specific to certain types of media.
    []Check for Windows Updates:
    • Make sure your Windows 7 installation is up to date by installing all available Windows updates. Sometimes, updates can contain fixes for hardware issues.
    [
    ]Hardware Check:
    • If none of the software solutions work, there may be a hardware issue with the optical drives. You could try connecting the drives to a different system to see if they work there. By following these steps, you should be able to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue with your optical drives not being recognized properly in Windows 7 Ultimate. Let me know if you have any questions or need further assistance!
