I have a Netgear RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N USB 2.0 Adapter and lately, my internet keeps getting into this weird mode where I'll start a Youtube video for instance, and it shows no signs of loading until 2 minutes later after which suddenly the entire video seems to have downloaded. I'm also getting bogus speeds on speedtest.net such as 200Mb/s (I wish). I tested with another wireless computer that has Vista, and it got normal speed readings at the same time that I was getting bogus readings, so I'm pretty sure it's not the router. Any ideas what might be causing this?

Solution
It seems like you're encountering some issues with your Netgear RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N USB 2.0 Adapter where your internet speed is erratic, showing delayed loading times for videos and displaying incorrect speed readings, unlike another device on the same network. Here are a few troubleshooting steps and potential reasons for the behavior you are experiencing:

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Update Adapter Drivers: Outdated drivers can cause connectivity issues. Ensure that your adapter has the latest drivers installed. You can download the latest drivers from the Netgear website.
  2. Check USB Port: Try plugging the adapter into a different USB port on your computer. Sometimes, USB ports can have connectivity...

Sometimes, USB ports can have connectivity issues.
  3. Interference: Other devices or electronic equipment near your adapter may cause interference. Keep the area around the adapter clear of obstructions and other devices.
  4. Signal Strength: Check the signal strength of your wireless connection. Weak signals can result in slow speeds and erratic behavior.
  5. Network Congestion: Other devices or network activity may be affecting your connection. Try using the adapter at a different time when network usage is lower to see if the issue persists.
  6. Channel Interference: Check if there is interference from other Wi-Fi networks using the same channel. You can change the channel on your router to reduce interference.
  7. Security Settings: Ensure that your security settings (WPA/WPA2, etc.) are correctly configured on your adapter and router.
  8. Adapter Settings: Check the power settings of the adapter in your computer's device manager to ensure it's not being power-managed in a way that affects performance.

    Possible Reasons:

    • Driver Issues: Outdated or corrupted drivers can impact the performance of the adapter.
    • Signal Interference: Nearby electronic devices or physical obstructions may be affecting the signal strength.
    • Network Congestion: High network traffic can lead to slower speeds.
    • Adapter Malfunction: The adapter itself could be malfunctioning.
By following these steps and considering the potential causes, you can troubleshoot and resolve the issues you're facing with your Netgear wireless adapter. If the problem persists, you may need to consider replacing the adapter or seeking further technical assistance.
