Hello,
I'm trying to connect to my web server with Yahoo. I have my own domain with them and use it for storage of files. I have never used Vista. I've been with XP since it came out but with all the great things I've heard about Windows 7 I want to give it a run.
In XP I would just go into "My Network Places" create a new network connection, enter the web site mywebserver.com, enter the name and password and I was set. It would open like a regular folder (after prompting name and pass).
In Windows 7 I "Set up a new connection or network", then "Connect to a workplace", Then "Use my Internet connection (VPN)". I then enter in my domain "mywebserver.com" into the Internet address box. After clicking next I enter my user name and password where indicated and check remember password and then click connect. It verifys the user name and password but then wont connect. I get this error:

The remote connection was not made because the attempted VPN tunnels failed. The VPN server might be unreachable. If this connection is attempting to use an L2TP/IPsec tunnel, the security parameters required IPsec negotiation might not be configured properly.

I'll be honest with you, I don't know what VPN tunnels are or L2TP/IPsec tunnels. If anyone could help me figure out how to set up this connection similar to what I had in XP I'd sure appreciate it.

Thank you,
Bill

Hello Bill, It sounds like you are trying to establish a connection to your web server using Windows 7 via a VPN but encountering some difficulties with the setup. The error message you received indicates that there might be an issue with the VPN settings on your Windows 7 system. Here's a step-by-step guide to setting up a VPN connection in Windows 7 similar to what you had in XP: 1. Open Network and Sharing Center: - Click on the network icon in the system tray, then select "Open Network and Sharing Center." 2. Set Up a New Connection or Network: - Click on "Set up a new connection or network." 3. Connect to a Workplace: - Select "Connect to a workplace" and click "Next." 4. Enter Server Address: - Enter the server address provided by Yahoo for your web server (e.g., mywebserver.com) in the Internet address field. 6. Enter Credentials: - Enter your username and password provided by Yahoo. 7. Adjust VPN Properties: - Click on "Properties" and go to the Security tab. - Make sure the Type of VPN is set to the appropriate protocol (e.g., Automatic, PPTP, L2TP/IPSec, etc.). - You can try different VPN types if the default one doesn't work. 8. Advanced Settings: - If necessary, adjust the advanced settings, especially if the VPN server requires specific configurations. 9. Connect: - Check the "Remember this password" box if you want Windows to remember your credentials. - Click "Connect" to attempt the VPN connection. 10. Troubleshoot: - If you encounter an error, you may need to troubleshoot the VPN connection by verifying the server address, credentials, and VPN type settings. If you continue to face issues connecting, you might need to consult with Yahoo support or your web server administrator for specific VPN settings or troubleshooting steps. VPN tunnels are secure connections used to transmit data over the internet securely, and L2TP/IPsec is a common VPN protocol that provides encryption for the data being transmitted. Let me know if you need any further assistance with this!
