How do I make it so I can play dvds? I have tried downloading several different programs but have not been able to get any to work

Try Klite Free-Codecs.com : Download K-Lite Codec Pack 9.5.5 FULL, K-Lite Codec Pack 9.5.5 STANDARD, K-Lite Codec Pack 9.5.5 BASIC I've used their Media Player Classic before.

If you have Win 8 Pro, you can add the Media Center for free.

VLC also makes a player that works in Win 8.

If you go the Media Center route, the wait right now may be more than 72 hours, so be patient.
