I have 2 computers running Windows 7, my home pc and a HTPC I have built. Both are connect to my homegroup. Both are set to workgroup. Both have the advance sharing features set with no password sharing. Attached to the HTPC via usb is an external 2TB drive with media on it. I want to access that drive and all the folders from the home pc over the wifi network.

On my home pc I can see the folders that are shared on the HTPC. When I click on one I get an error saying I do not have permission to access the file. All the folders and the external drive are set to be shared on the home network and read/write by Everyone.

What am I doing wrong?

Solution
It seems like there might be some permissions issue causing you trouble accessing the shared folders on your HTPC from your home PC. Let's troubleshoot this step by step: 1. Check HomeGroup Settings: - Since you mentioned both computers are part of the same homegroup, ensure that both systems are actually part of the homegroup. - Check if the HomeGroup troubleshooter reports any issues. 2. Check File and Folder Sharing Settings: - Verify that the folders and the external drive on the HTPC are set to be shared with read/write access for "Everyone." - Check the Advanced Sharing settings to ensure proper permissions are set. 3. Network Discovery and File Sharing: - Make sure that both computers have network discovery...

Network Discovery and File Sharing: - Make sure that both computers have network discovery enabled and are set to allow files and printers to be shared. - Check if the network profile is set to private for your Wi-Fi network. 4. Guest or Anonymous Access: - Confirm that the network sharing settings allow guest or anonymous access, especially if you are sharing with the "Everyone" group. 5. NTFS Permissions: - Double-check the NTFS permissions on the shared folders and the external drive. Even if sharing permissions are set correctly, NTFS permissions can override them. 6. Firewall and Security Software: - Temporarily disable the firewall on both computers to see if it's blocking the connection. If disabling the firewall resolves the issue, create an exception for file sharing. - Check if any security software, such as antivirus programs, might be interfering with the network sharing. 7. Credentials and Authentication: - When prompted for credentials to access the shared folders, try using the credentials of a user account on the HTPC that has access to those folders. 8. Network Troubleshooting: - Run the Network Sharing Troubleshooter on both machines to diagnose any network-related issues. - Restart both computers and try accessing the shared folders again. By following these steps and checking each configuration setting, you should be able to identify the root cause of the permission issue and resolve it. Let me know if you encounter any specific issues during this troubleshooting process.
