Hello. I am using windows 11 pro, version 23H2, build 22631.6199. It is not doing the automatic update, so I have tried to manually update it. I have downloaded KB5065431 (x64 package) and tried to install it. However, I keep getting an error "the update is not applicable to your computer". What is a solution?

Hi revorwin11,
The error is expected in this case.

Why KB5065431 says “not applicable”

You are already on:
Windows 11 Pro 23H2 build 22631.6199
But KB5065431 is for:
OS Build 22631.5909
So your current build, 22631.6199, is newer than the update you downloaded. Windows will reject it because installing KB5065431 would effectively be a downgrade.

What to do instead

1. Do not try to install KB5065431 again

That package is older than your installed build. The “not applicable” message does not mean your system is broken in this specific case.

2. Check Windows Update normally

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Windows Update.
  3. Click Check for updates.
  4. Also check Advanced options.
  5. Make sure Pause updates is not enabled.
  6. If you are on Wi-Fi, make sure the connection is not set as metered.

3. Upgrade from Windows 11 23H2

Since you are on Windows 11 Pro 23H2, the better solution is to upgrade to a newer supported Windows 11 release, such as 24H2 or later, instead of trying to install older 23H2 cumulative updates.
Use one of these methods:
  1. Go to Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Look for a feature update offer, such as Windows 11, version 24H2.
  3. If offered, choose Download and install.
If Windows Update does not offer it:
  1. Back up important files first.
  2. Create a restore point.
  3. Download the official Windows 11 Installation Assistant from Microsoft.
  4. Run it and choose to keep your files and apps.

If automatic updates still do not work

Try the Windows Update troubleshooter first:
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  3. Run Windows Update.
  4. Restart the PC.
  5. Check for updates again.
You can also check whether update policies are blocking updates:
  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Type:
gpedit.msc
  1. Go to:
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update
  1. Look for configured policies such as update deferrals, pause settings, or target version settings.
If you are not using this PC in a business/domain environment, most of these policies should be set to “Not configured.”

Bottom line

Your manual install failed because KB5065431 is older than your current build. The real fix is to let Windows Update find a newer update or upgrade your Windows 11 installation to a newer supported version.
