Hi,
I'm having this issue since I moved to W2008 R2 64 bits. I was using W2008 X64 before and it worked absolutely fine. As I'm using W7 X86 on my notebook since it was available on the MSDN website as a RTM version, I thought I would like to have a homogeneous working environment so decided to upgrade my work PC to W2008 R2 X64 (it was W2008 x64 before). I started to have several problems with open/save dialogs as well as with file operations from within third party software (i.e. very slow file delete operations from winamp and revo uninstaller). O good example is the "new folder" button from the open/save dialogs. It can takes more than a minute for the "new folder" to be created and the same happens if from the same dialog I try to rename any folder or file. It takes a long, long time to the operation hit its end. This does not happen with Windows Explorer, only with open/save dialogs.
I thought it could be a problem with the W2008 R2 so I tried W7 X64 on a second partition, and the results are exactly the same I'm having with W2008 R2. It does not happen with X86 W7 installed on the same machine. I think this has to do with the 64 bit version of the new Windows generation, as I never had this problem before on this same PC with W2003 x64 and W2008 X64. I really need the 64 bit so I can have access to all 8GB RAM I have installed, and I would like very much to not have to install W2008 "R1" x64 again. All

I'm attaching a zip file containing a MHT file of a recording done with PSR. In the two screens you can see the moment I hit the "new folder" button and the time the new folder actually appears, more than one minute later.

BTW, my system specs are shown bellow and all updates are done. All drivers are correctly installed. Thanks a lot for your help.
Jay

Solution
It seems like you are facing some performance issues with open/save dialogs and file operations after moving to Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit, despite not having these issues with Windows 7 64-bit or earlier versions. This could be related to the 64-bit architecture of the newer Windows versions. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue: 1. Check System Resources: - Ensure that your system resources are not under heavy use when performing these operations. Check the CPU and memory usage during these slow operations. 2. Update Drivers: - Even though you mentioned that all drivers are correctly installed, it's worth checking if there are any updated drivers available for your hardware...

Check System Resources: - Ensure that your system resources are not under heavy use when performing these operations. Check the CPU and memory usage during these slow operations. 2. Update Drivers: - Even though you mentioned that all drivers are correctly installed, it's worth checking if there are any updated drivers available for your hardware components, especially for Windows Server 2008 R2. 3. Compatibility Mode: - Try running the third-party software in compatibility mode. Right-click on the executable, go to Properties, and under the Compatibility tab, try running it in compatibility mode for a previous version of Windows. 4. Antivirus and Firewall: - Temporarily disable your antivirus and firewall to see if they are causing the slowdowns. Sometimes these security measures can interfere with file operations. 5. System File Checker: - Run the System File Checker tool to scan and repair corrupted system files. Open a Command Prompt as an administrator and type sfc /scannow. 6. Disk Cleanup: - Perform a disk cleanup to remove temporary and unnecessary files that might be affecting system performance. 7. Performance Options: - Adjust visual effects for better performance. Go to Control Panel > System and Security > System > Advanced system settings. Under the Advanced tab, click on Settings in the Performance section and choose the option to adjust for best performance. 8. Check Event Viewer: - Check the Windows Event Viewer for any relevant error messages that might give you more insight into what is causing the slowdowns. 9. Test in Safe Mode: - Boot the computer into Safe Mode and see if the issue persists. This can help isolate if any third-party software is causing the problem. These steps should help in diagnosing and potentially resolving the slow file operations and open/save dialog issues you are facing on Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit and Windows 7 64-bit. Let me know if you need further assistance or if you have any other questions.
