Hey folks, brand new to this forum. Hope everyone is well this lovely Thursday morning. I have been reading article after blog after other forum threads on installing Win7. I'm almost ready to pull that trigger. I've got my Home Premium disc right here and have been juggling 32 or 64 bit. Most likely will go 64. The one thing I can't find an answer to is when I do a clean install, what will happen to the recovery partition that still holds vista on it. I didn't get a disc when I bought this HP pavillion a1710n couple of years ago. Of course to utilize it would take it back to retail state and should not be something I would need after installing Win7. So, should I delete it? And how would I delete it? Will Win7 give me that option when it re-formats the primary drive that is "C"? Or would Win7 make a new recovery drive that is "D" now. I don't see where it would be necessary for a recovery drive now that I have Win7 discs. I know that it will give the option to delete and format primary at some stage of install. This is about the only question that I have that's holding me back to installing this new and great OS.
I'll be waiting and watching for some of the best and brightest here at Win7 forums to help me out. Thanks alot for taking some time to read my post. I'm hoping to be around here for the long run. I use to peruse Scott Finnies newsletter forums for computer questions but seems like lately he's gone all Apple on me. Anyway. later folks.

Mtbarbee,

You could simply delete the partition for recovery for Vista and extend your other partition into it however should you ever decide to revert to Windows Vista you will be unable to do so.

Also, should you require additional assistance Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 Support Forum located here Windows 7 Category. It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams. You may want to check the threads there for additional support.

I would leave the recovery partition unless you are 100% certain you will not have any issues with Win 7, otherwise, as stated by Jessica, you will be totally out of luck restoring back to a factory Vista machine.

So if I keep the recovery partition and decide I want to keep Win7, like I know I will, can I delete it later within the new OS? Or would I need to install a partitioning program?

The Windows Disk Management should handle it. You could also make the disk set just in case. Check the HP site for directions it will take 3 DVD;s.

thanks alot Joe, and everyone else. i will make those recovery discs, finalize a back up today and pull that trigger and install Win7. That's all that I was waiting on to answer my questions regarding installation. I'm sure that I will be back around perusing this fine forum for answers to what I hope is the best OS yet from MS.
