I have XP Pro (32bit) on my C partition (Disk 1), Win 7 32 bit on my F partition (Disk 2) , both are SCSI drives. I also have two WD sata drives 120gb and 640gb.

XP recognizes all drives, win7 does not recognize the 640gb hard drive.

Suggestions please (in addition to uninstall Win 7

To address the issue of Windows 7 not recognizing the 640GB SATA drive while both XP and the 120GB SATA drive are recognized, you can try the following troubleshooting steps:

  1. Check Device Manager:
    • Right-click on "Computer" or "This PC" and select "Manage."

    []Initialize the Drive:

    • Right-click on the 640GB drive and choose "Initialize Disk" if it's not initialized already.
    • Choose the partition style (usually MBR for drives under 2TB) and proceed to initialize the disk.
    [
    ]Format the Drive:
    • After initializing the disk, right-click on the unallocated space and select "New Simple Volume."
    • Follow the wizard to format the drive with a file system (NTFS recommended).

      Step 3: Update Drivers

    []Update Drivers:
    • Visit the website of the drive manufacturer or Windows Update to see if there are any driver updates for your SATA controller.
    • Ensure that your chipset drivers are up to date as well.

      Step 4: Check BIOS Settings

    [
    ]Check BIOS Settings:
    • Enter your computer's BIOS and ensure that the SATA port for the 640GB drive is enabled.
    • Verify that the drive is detected in the BIOS.

      Step 5: Disk Management Utility

    []Use Disk Management Utility:
    • In some cases, the drive might not have a drive letter assigned. You can do this in Disk Management by right-clicking on the drive and selecting "Change drive letter and paths."

      Step 6: Troubleshoot Hardware

    [
    ]Test the Drive and Cable:
    • Swap the SATA cables and ports with the 120GB drive to check if the issue lies with the drive or the cables. Following these steps should help in resolving the issue of Windows 7 not recognizing the 640GB SATA drive. If the problem persists after trying these steps, there may be a hardware compatibility issue or a problem with the drive itself.
