Win 7 tells me updates are available, but when I start the update it does not connect to download. All other sites work with no problems. I can download anything I want. Is it possible to re-install Win 7 from my installation DVD without deleting pragrams and data ? I have done this with XP a number of times, but never tried with 7.

Solution
If you're facing issues with Windows 7 updates not being able to download even though other sites and downloads work fine, there could be various reasons for this, such as network configuration, Windows Update settings, or even potential issues with the update servers. Here are some steps you can take to try and resolve the update issue before considering a reinstallation:

Steps to Address Windows 7 Update Issues:

  1. Restart your computer: Sometimes a simple restart can resolve temporary connectivity or update service issues.
  2. Check Internet Connection: Ensure that your internet connection is stable and working properly. You can try accessing other websites or services to verify this.

  2. Check Internet Connection: Ensure that your internet connection is stable and working properly. You can try accessing other websites or services to verify this.
  3. Run Windows Update Troubleshooter:
    • Go to Control Panel > Troubleshooting > System and Security > Fix problems with Windows Update.
    []Check Windows Update Service:
    • Press Windows Key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
    • Find "Windows Update" in the list, ensure it is running, and set to Automatic.
    [
    ]Clear Windows Update Cache:
    • Stop the Windows Update service.
    • Delete the contents of the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder.
    • Start the Windows Update service again.
    []Manually Download Updates:
    • If automatic updates are not working, you can manually download and install updates from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
    [
    ]Reinstallation Without Data Loss:
    • You can perform a repair installation, also known as an in-place upgrade, to repair the system files without affecting your programs and data. Here's how you can do it:
      • Insert your Windows 7 installation DVD.
      • Run the setup from within Windows and choose the "Upgrade" option.
      • Follow the on-screen instructions to perform the upgrade.

        In-Place Upgrade Considerations:

        • During an in-place upgrade, your settings, programs, and files should remain intact. However, it's advisable to back up your important data before proceeding in case of any unforeseen issues.
        • Although an in-place upgrade is designed to keep your programs and data, it's always best to have a full backup of your system just in case.
By following these steps, you can attempt to resolve the Windows 7 update issue and, if necessary, proceed with an in-place upgrade to repair the system without losing your programs and data.
