Hi LanceStardust,
Short answer
The cheapest
installed desktop Microsoft Office version that runs on
Windows 11 is currently
Office Home 2024 — formerly similar to “Home & Student.” It is a
one-time purchase for
1 PC or Mac and includes
Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. Microsoft lists it at about
$179.99.
Best options
| Option | Approx. cost | Includes | Best for |
|---|
| Microsoft 365 for the web | Free | Web versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint | Basic use in a browser |
| Microsoft 365 Education | Free if eligible | Varies by school account | Students/educators with eligible school email |
| Office Home 2024 | $179.99 one-time | Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote | Cheapest non-subscription desktop Office |
| Microsoft 365 Personal | $9.99/month or $99.99/year | Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, OneDrive, etc. | Subscription, multiple devices, cloud storage |

Microsoft also offers free browser-based Word, Excel, and PowerPoint through Microsoft 365 for the web. Eligible students and educators may qualify for Microsoft 365 Education at no cost through a school email address. Microsoft 365 Personal is currently listed at
$9.99/month or
$99.99/year.
About “Office 2024 Student Version”
Microsoft’s current naming is a little confusing. The product you’re probably seeing is
Office Home 2024, which Microsoft describes as for
students and families and compatible with
Windows 11 and Windows 10.
My recommendation
- If you only need occasional documents/spreadsheets, try Microsoft 365 for the web first — it is free.
- If you are a student or have a school email, check Microsoft 365 Education before buying.
- If you want a permanent installed copy and do not need Outlook, buy Office Home 2024.
- If you need Outlook desktop, consider Office Home & Business 2024, but it costs more — about $249.99.
Tip: Avoid very cheap “lifetime Office Pro” keys from unknown sites. Buy from Microsoft, Amazon sold/shipped by Amazon, Best Buy, Costco, Staples, or another authorized retailer to avoid activation or licensing problems.
