Microsoft is introducing a new feature in Windows 11 that allows users to customize the on-screen display (OSD) positions for brightness and volume indicators. This enhancement, currently available in the latest Dev Channel build, addresses user feedback requesting more flexibility in the placement of these indicators.
In the updated Windows 11 build, users can choose to position the brightness and volume indicators at either the top center or top left of the screen. This change aims to improve accessibility and user experience by accommodating different user preferences and screen setups. To adjust these settings, navigate to Settings > System > Notifications, where a new dropdown menu labeled "Position of the onscreen pop-up" allows for the selection of the preferred indicator location.
This update is part of Microsoft's ongoing efforts to modernize the Windows interface. Previously, in Build 22533, Microsoft redesigned the hardware indicators for brightness, volume, camera privacy, camera on/off, and airplane mode to align with Windows 11's design principles. These new flyouts appear when using the respective keys on a laptop and support both light and dark modes, providing a more cohesive Windows experience. The redesigned indicators are interactive, allowing users to adjust settings directly from the OSD. (thewincentral.com)
The decision to offer customizable OSD positions stems from user feedback highlighting issues with the default placement. For instance, some users reported that the new bottom-center location of the indicators was obstructed by their hands when using keyboard shortcuts, making it difficult to view the adjustments. By allowing users to move the indicators to the top of the screen, Microsoft aims to enhance usability and address these concerns. (answers.microsoft.com)
It's important to note that this feature is currently in the testing phase within the Windows Insider Program's Dev Channel. Microsoft often tests new features with Insiders before rolling them out to the general public, so it may take some time before this functionality becomes available in the stable release of Windows 11.
In addition to the customizable OSD positions, Microsoft is introducing a new "Recall" feature with a personalized homepage designed to help users "find and reconnect with the apps and websites that matter to you." This homepage will provide recommendations based on recent activity, including specific websites and apps, enhancing productivity and user engagement.
These updates reflect Microsoft's commitment to refining the Windows 11 experience by incorporating user feedback and modern design principles. By offering more customization options and improving the coherence of the user interface, Windows 11 continues to evolve to meet the diverse needs of its user base.
